So Sundeep after sniffing around the site and the market for > 9 months looking mainly at 964's I ve decided on a LHD 993. Seems to me the 993 is a 'better' car all round. So go ahead and tell me Im making the right decision. Anybody else feel free to chip in
and even disagree!!BTW do I recognise your name from UK TT Forum?

993 is a newer car, i.e it feels more solid, however 964 feels more raw, more like a pre 89.

I could not personally live with LHD.

therefore I originally had a 964 and then got a 993 when I could afford it. Mind you I spent £7k on my 964 and sold it for £2k less than I paid for it.

If you can live with LHD then thr 993 is for you.

What is your budget?

BTW Sundeep used to have a TT so I am sure it is him from the forum

Cheers and welcome to the slippery slope

Hi Poon , budget is 20-23K which really rules out a RHD 993

Why so strong on no LHD?

20-23K might just get you a RHD. But if you can live with a LHD then you'll get much more of a car for your money. LHD vs RHD is a very personal thing, some swears by it, some can live with it, some rather not have it and others can't stand it. I've been using my LHD for over 4yrs pretty much as a daily driver most of the time, and loving it. I think as a car it's actually better due to design, pedal positisions etc. Only trouble is car park barriers and drive through, just make sure you other half is with you then!

rumour has it .. I used to be SundeepTT.. although I managed to convince the ttforum folk to change my id to Sundeep993.... not very original, just there you are..!
not sure if you ever read the ttoc mag's ? if so did you catch the 2 leftie articles..??

1st question do you drive a leftie right now.... if not, then not an issue as I never did before I got the TT.... so I wouldn't worry about it ! after a short while a LHD will be natural and from what you have saved over a RHD you will be pleasantly thrilled !

but there ain't nothing wrong with a RHD.. sure if I was loaded it would get one.... but then to save £5k+ a not to loose out on any of the 911 experience made it a no brainer for me ! and like yourself I only had about £24k to spend on the car..... which is the same as a 180TT ! and remember your 993 one will hardly suffer any depreciation...

LHD is primarily about cost... sub £20k is non-varioram although there are enough varioram bargains from £20k.... that's if you live with a 'different' colour.... I was looking at a 96 blue 993 for less than £20k...

apart from the obviously LHD disadvantages.... the real plus apart from the price is 'oddly' the having the correct pedal position !

993 is the main choice here.... but like me I first looked at a 964 as my lower cost option but went for the well known 993 instead (although little things like better servicing costs & fewer historic problems made the 993 the one to have..)

from the TT .. I do miss a lot of parts of that car..... but here we are comparing a Sports car in the form of a TT to a real Super car ! after all back in 1996 my 993 was priced up at about £65k ! and there isn't much from back then that is still worth so much.. !

right decision = yes...... ! from the sound, the feel to the whole air-cooled legendary status of the 993.... you will drive a legend in the form of the 993 that does need respect..... no ESP or tracking control to wade in (unless you get the C4 with ABD).. so where the TT is a piece of cake to drive.... there is nothing finer than a rear wheel drive and the howl of the flat 6 cylinder engine.... :)

at the end of the day for the price of a 1 year of a 225 TT you can get a 175 mph legend in the form of a 993... ! that as my wife says I get way too much attention from other girls when I drive it !

a note however is that it does costs a few more pennies to run than the TT.... but IMHO is worth every penny ! fuel economy is worse cause I'm having too much fun ! service from a specialist is 'similar' to a TTQ service from a dealer.... and they do take a lot of Oil.. but as always they look after you if you look after them ! As again there aren't too many cars from then which you can still use to max every day....

but from a cost persepctive I had a budget of £26k.. £24k for the car & £2k for anything that could have gone wrong.. so for me it worked out ok... as I had budgetted for any extra that came up in the 1st year...

Slippery slope.. yes indeed.. the real problem is when you've owned a 993, it's difficult to consider any other car every again ! as there is a lot you can still do to your 993 to improve / modernise / customise it !

but whatever 911 you get (964 or 993) you won't be disappointed, the 911 is indeed a premier league car....

regards

Well done Sundeep, enjoyed reading your comment. You're quite right, when you've owned a 911 there really isn't any other car quite like it. There may be better/faster/prettier cars, but there's something about a 911 that you just can't explain.

Hi Martyn

Over 2 years ago I was in the same position budgetwise. I had a LHD 964 C2 Cab and was looking to move 'upwards'. LHD at the time was more in the region of £7-10k difference than the RHD equivalent. I've driven LHD for some 9 years now and having gotten used to it, the ability to get newer/lower mileage/better condition car for the same money has been the driving factor for me. The running costs have definitely been cheaper for my current 993 compared to the 964. As Mick says above, about the only downside of LHD is ticket barriers, which I can live with. In the next couple of weeks I'll be changing again, but sticking with LHD and actually getting my first coupe having had one 79 SC Targa and two Cabs. In the 11 odd years of drivership, I've engaged in more positive comments/conversations surrounding the cars than negative or jealous gestures or acts and this forum and the folks I've met socially through it, have helped tremendously on a variety of issues. IMHO, once you've made the 911 decision, RHD/LHD/variant etc makes no difference. Drive a couple of different cars to get a feel and then make a decision based on a combination of budget and whatever blows your hair back. You'll find passionate opinions on all the models here and thats not a bad thing

anyway I'm still very much a newbie to the world of 911...... :D

all of the esteemed above are amongst the 993 legends who are in the know... esp about that slippery slope...

Thanks for your comments.

Sundeep I was (and still am ) TwickTT on the TT forum. I was never really pleased with the TT as I felt it lacked something, it never really engaged me when driving. For the past 2 years ive been driving a Mini Cooper S which is great fun but it s time to get a serious car again.

Ive always promised myself a 911 and as I said earlier I feel the 993 is the way to go. Re LHD I dont feel it will be a problem so assuming I get the right price for the cooper S decision made!

Do you guys with lhd not find it difficult when overtaking?

Migration info. Legacy thread was 22375

Can be a bit of a pain on narrow long straight stretch of single carriage ways, but due to the performance of the car, just hold back a bit more and foot down when there's a chance.

Over the yrs I found that places where I don't feel comfortable overtaking with the LHD 993, I wouldn't want to overtake with wife's RHD 530 either.

As Mick says, a bit of a run up is fine. Plenty under your hoof

I've been driving a LHD motor around for a while now and you very quickly get used to it. Day to day driving is fine, overtaking can be a bit of a pain on straight roads but the comments elsewhere about hanging back and nailing it are fair.

M6 toll at rush hour was a bit embarassing mind! It's amazing how quick you can get out of a car, run round it, pay with a credit card, complete your lap of the car and get back in and away when there's a queue of 30 cars behind you looking miffed!! I also tried reversing round McD's drive through once - my girlfriend has subsequently banned that particular manoevure and makes me park and go in now!

If you go to one of those Red Cross shops you can get a "helping hand", basically a graber/extension, good for geting the barrier tickets etc, looks a bit silly though! Or what I do is just climb over to the otherside instead of getting out, it's only a couple of feet across.

Migration info. Legacy thread was 22454

cheers Mick.... must visit one of those Red cross shops for a grabber ! seriously !

the perils of LHD ! how 'we' know that well......

worst part is when you get too close to the ticket barrier and mess up one's alloys :(
doh !
