Oil filter change - what''s this

I'm just in the process of changing my engine oil. I've decided to change the filter as well. I've undone the plastic holder and the paper element came out at the same time - no need to pull it off the pipe that's suggested in various you tube videos. When I've looked at the filter it's got the item pictured in one of its ends? What is this as it doesn't seem to be referred to and if I place it in the new filter the paper element it won't stay fixed to the metal tube protruding from the engine casing and the plastic filter holder fixed to?Everything I've seen suggest the filter should just push on to that tube and the plastic holder is screwed up after. This works if I dont use the insert pictured. Cars a 98 c2

You need a new plastic canister that holds the oil filter .. that part should be in the base of it ... never actually seen one come out before .. and ive done 1 or 2 oil changes in my time !
