Tensioner Pulley left me stranded in the South of France!

You mentioned the two versions of the pulleys Alex but I couldn't work out from it which were the recommended ones after all of your failures.
 
All 3 pulleys are the same. What I was saying are on 2 of the pulleys, the mounting position is fixed. But the tensioner pulley is on a spring loaded arm so that it puts tension on the belt and keeps it tight. The pulley position has a much greater load on it than the fixed 2 positions, so I'd maybe replace the bearing on the 2 fixed pulley to save some dosh, but on the tensioner one I'd now only fit a new pulley and not risk fitting an alternative bearing.

In the diagram below, pulleys 3 & 8 are the fixed ones, 7 is the tensioner pully under more load:

Nightmare scenario that Alex, although it made for interesting reading and gives people an idea on how to go about things, if things go bad abroad.

I had to visit a couple of Italian OPCs on my trip last year. Not ideal but they were good to deal with.

Glad you got sorted anyway and as you say, at least you didn't have to fly back out there just to drive all the way home again. :grin:

A great read and well done sorting it out.
Got me worrying now as we are off to France soon and I replaced all 3 bearings some years and 10K miles ago.
No issues so far and I take the belt off each year and spin the pulleys to check play etc by hand. All seems good but I might just do a CYA and take spare and tools after reading this!
But where do you stop with "just in case " items??
I have carried all sorts of bits in all sorts of old cars round Europe for decades and so far never used one item!
 
I have a noisy clutch release bearing, so I'm also carrying one of those about with me at the moment. I know it's not a roadside fix but if it goes and I can't get the part, it'll cost more time than just finding a place to fit it.

Crank sensor, is another good one I carry, but yes, where does it end.
 
Too right! Regarding spares and tools. I used to take boatloads of stuff, but never used it.

Sod's Law last year I knew I'd had bother with one of my Alcon discs and had rebuilt it with new hardware. I had a brand new pair of standard discs in the garage and even picked up the 'dodgy" side one to take with us but the weight made me chuck it back in the box.
Sure enough the Alcon came loose on the outward leg of the trip and I had no tools or parts.
Did my head in for the rest of trip, banging away. :frustrated: :grin:

Still though just make sure you have Euro breakdown and recovery cover and take the basics.
I take 1 spare coil pack, a spare serpentine belt with spanner and a litre each of oil and coolant. Oh and gaffer tape and cable ties. I guess adding a spare pulley or bearing wouldn't be too hard either.
Again though, I've never needed any of it.

You have to just hope it doesn't happen and then take it as it comes, if it does.
 
For the 1st time ever I'm glad I had cover. Barclays travel pack for £12.50/month and I have a devent holiday Insurance package and full RAC European breakdown cover in any vehicle of any age I'm traveling in.
 
thats why i keep it simple pal, 2 flights 500 quid straight to Nice then an uber to Monaco 150 euro each way no hassel, hire something tasty for 10 days for about 2-3 grand, (get half a dozen tickets) then fly home

your certainly brave mate i wouldnt drive my 911 outside the M60 and not expect issues, ***** myself after buying it driving home to Manchester from London.

Last year my water pump decided it had had enough just outside Castellane at 5pm on Saturday. That was err...fun :grin:
