The 997 "bore" score question.

Double post. What happened to the post delete button??

Oh and there's a difference between visible scuffs/marring on the bores and actual scoring, the former to be expected but not necessarily a precursor to the dreaded BS.

And also a bore scope won't see a degradation of the piston coating, which is where it starts IIRC

I bought mine in August 2018, it had just been rebuilt at JAZ Porsche and had 51k on the clock, i've used it daily ever since and it's now on 71k, it's never used a drop of oil or given me any problems whatsoever, I think it's probably worth roughly what I paid for it back then, so all in all an absolutely fantastic car.

It's easy to be put off by reading horror stories that get repeated and blown up x10, and it's also easy to believe that only certain cars that have been touched by certain specialists will be the reliable ones, but that's not necessarily true, do your due diligence and get stuck in, brilliant cars.

Why a 991 :dont know:

Because he wont have to worry about IMS and BS ?

Plus of course everyone's doing it  I think Jonttt May mean don't discount the 997.2, although of course we all know the 991 is the sweet spot of the 911 range.

In no way am I questioning your vastly superior knowledge and position as a patriarch on this forum, but....

Out of interest when was it decided that the electric steering, inward shifted engine 991 decided as the sweetspot? :Dance-Tap:

Realise I may well be missing then finer nuances of sarcasm but I thought worth a punt.

It seems to be the opinion of many the 997.2 is the sweet spot as the last of the cars made before VAG took over Porsche completely, Its had the DFI engine that solved some of the possible flaws in the 997.1 engines design (although a Hartech rebuilt will solve those and IMO a Hartech rebuilt 997.1 4S is actually the sweetspot), it has some driver aids but not enough to ruin the driver focussed enjoyment that the newer cars do. even though its only very slightly smaller than the 991 is looks smaller and more 911 like and its the last shape 911 to have aggressive lines and curves as the newer cars got very flattened out . There's nothing wrong with the 991 it retained the nice big engine and has some nice tech inside but I dont think I would call it the sweet spot ,but every one is entitled to there views :thumb: :thumb:

Nah sweet spot was the 964.Early 911 in a party frock :thumb:

Well I cant argue with that . theres something very real about air-cooled 911s :thumb: :thumb:

The 997 GT3 RS 4.0 has to be in for a good shout but I realise not a car most can own.

I understand the electric steering is sorted now and the rear wheel steering is also rated. Drove a mate's Litchfield Carrera T, was a thing of beauty, although my lowly Cayman sounded better.

I'd agree with 997.1 as a sweet spot (no bias there on my part whatsoever).

In all honesty though, I'd say one of the biggest reasons for that is the sound.

The 997.2 may well have ironed out a lot of the gen 1 issues, but the DFI seems to have robbed the exhaust note of a bit of character.
