Good Evening all,

Im looking for some advoce. Back in 2021 i noticed that my 126k mile 996 c2 3.4 had the dreaded intermix. I parked it and planned to fix it myself. Since then I got married and had a baby, what people say is true, little ones really do change your life! Last weekend I finally got the heads off, I was going to send them off to Motorcast and Derek who I had read about on this forum, get them welded, checked and tested, then put back onto engine along with refreshing a lot of other bits.... However... to my horror...when I peeked into the cylinders...scoring! bloody scoring!.

I'm now in a quandry. I am relatively ok with spannering however I have read lots of horror stories. I know I could split the block and get the block machined but I'm not sure if I have the confidence to get it all back again, there is nothing in the bentley manual and i'm not sure I can bank on youtube videos.

I'm based in essex and would really appreciate any help/ guidance anyone has to offer.

How bad is the scoring? Which cylinders? Are you certain its knackered?

At the stage you are at, without the confidence to split it perhaps you should get some quotes for a short motor rebuild and assemble the heads back on yourself?

I could probably split it just would need some guidence on what to do etc. I have attached the photos of the worst scoring.

Very complicated engines to build, much better getting it to a specialist. There's also a bunch of specialist tools, plus the knowledge of things to do will make it more reliable, i.e. the nuts on the intermediate shaft can come loose so need addressing etc etc
 
James, If you can remove an engine you can strip and rebuild it! You will need a few specialist tools which are relatively inexpensive and you are good to go.

I was faced with a similar problem. I bought a 3.6 with a damaged engine and was just about to set about a rebuild when i found a low mileage engine on ebay. The chap delivered it and garanteed it. I popped it in and it was perfect. A lot cheaper than a rebuild and I still have the old engine in my garage which I will sell or split for parts.

Have alook on ebay, the chap is based in N Ireland and often has complete engines for sale.
 
Fair enough if you've got the skills, I had a look and the knowledge and fixes the experts come up with makes it worthwhile imo.

The full Porsche manual to disassemble and reassemble the engine is available for free here (along with the rest of the car):

Have a read through and see how you feel about it. It's fairly straightforward apart from installing the gudgeon pins in two of the cylinders, but there are plenty of YT videos covering that step. It's a big job, but manageable step by step. At 126k the main and big ends probably need refreshing anyway, the timing chain guides likely also quite worn.

Are you sure the intermix is a cracked head and not the oil/water heat exchanger? They can also fail, so worth pressure testing to be sure.
 
I remember Matt showing me an arrow on one of the engine parts and the German word underneath looked like up. But actually meant down. Always installed backwards by people who don't know.

It's like the batteries in a tado, the spring goes against the battery nipple. Just don't apply any British common sense and use RTFQ.
 
I have the kit for the gudgeon circlip, I'm still just getting a parts list together to price everything up, but I do think that I will take on the project.
