My 997.1 turbo and it goes like a bat out of zuffenhausen

tb993tt said:
When you say "Tractive" giving you details of spring rates I presume you mean Tractive UK ?
This chap bought a set a few years after me, the development work on Porsche 911s was done by TPC racing in the States and they have a very active track racing program so have a lot of experience with Tractive and what works.

I opted to go with the lower end of spring rates they advised from memory it is 336 front 616 rear (an imperial unit) with the DDA shocks picking up any slack in the system and I have to say they have been great for 8 years before the rears needed a rebuild recently.

TPC fit the Swift range of springs FWIW and interestingly they have the helper at the bottom not the top !
If you contacted TPC I'm sure they will tell you what range of springs they use on 997 Turbo applications then you could cross reference.

Your dyno showing near 900NM, if this is real torque and if you use it and your engine has stock rods then they will bend at some point, the two "ifs" being very relevant :)

In all fairness I havnt been trying very hard to contact them. I'll prod the guys doing the install for some more info!

Top man! Thanks, I have sent them a message. Awaiting their response!
I have seen a few pics of the tractives upside down lol thought it odd too.

Re torque vs rods
I havnt been driving the car hard, at all, anyways.
I'm no engineer, for sure, but I think we cannot use one number (torque or power value) to determine how and when our rods will bend.
There are thousands of 700/800+hp cars on the road and have been fine for thousands of miles.
I don't want to go too off topic but there are many factors at play e.g. Poor tune, poor fuel, torque, over rev/high rpm, knock sensors
What parameters top tuners tune to, I dont know, but top tuners offer up to 850hp on stock internals.

Going forward, I have some other plans so it'll be off to the tuners soon either way.

On that note, I would love to hear a first hand and up-to-date information from a reputable person/company on the subject.

In other news I'm picking the car up tomorrow
Also under going a gbox service while with them.
What should I ask/expect from them?

No ansa to this it really depends how you use the car and the output and rev range where you tuner has pegged torque at. Even the type of turbo is important with VTGs being much softer on engines. I only ever feel like I get full torque from 4000rpm 4th gear onwards on my 9e tune both on v power and race fuel. I've even blown a stock 997 turbo engine up on autobahn high speed cruising at 150-170mph. Will do rods for sure at some stage myself. VTG torque builds very progressively. Only reason to do the rods is if you take on track. Not straight line dragging which is not too bad on these cars but actual track work which is very hard on components.

This is crazy power figure 9e came up with on VBOX power estimator in whp. I'd say mine nearer 650whp (730bhp at crank) on race fuel and 600whp (680bhp at crank) on v power. My 0-300kph times bear this out. i.e. 24-25 secs on v power and 21-22 secs on race fuel. I always run race fuel at events. I think this has protected my engine as I've seen loads of broken 996 and 997 at drag racing. Mines probably only 911 at these drag events thats very luckily never broken down.

GT2 front suspension slightly different to 997 turbo due to awd of latter hence differences. Steering rack different too and more precise.

Interesting you mention the steering rack. I have been wondering if it's transferable to other models. Can imagine it's more direct.

A little update - the tractives are great! A notable difference to my Bilstein B16s that were removed. Very responsive to road bumps and compressions. The tractive controller is extremely quick at changing damper stiffness with 5 increments of stiffness. The hardware is really, really good!

Now onto limitations, I have had the controller installed in the glove compartment as was suggested by the company doing the work. Tractive do not (currently) offer a product to mount it anywhere in the car. Some people have it in the centre console. Firstly, in order for the controller to read G forces, acceleration, etc, accurately it should be mounted as central to the car as possible (as is stated in the installation documents) and secondly, as the car goes flying into corners its reading the gforce of it sliding around in my glove compartment! I played with the idea of fiberglassing it into an airvent but it just proved too big to fit without surgery on the controller. I have tried to contact various specialists about a solution but nobody is interested.
The DSC box allows the user to plug in a laptop and to see what data is being logged. I have been in touch with a certain suspension specialist and asked them what data can be read off the controller and the response was
Hi, unfortunately not the Tractive display is purely for control purposes. A separate data logger or dash would be required for that data

And went on to suggest seperate data loggers to collect data. Boohoo. Not that I would change the setup but still it would have been nice to be able to see it. Knowing this now, I would still go for the tractive setup 100% considering that the DSC box doesn't log things like tyre temps, tyre wear patterns, and all the suspension and driving data that can be logged from trackside telemetry.

So, does anybody use a data logger? :p

And on a seperate note, I had been toying with the idea to install a nose lift system in order to get the car up and over bumps and my driveway but the Suspension has a black cone at the top of it and I assume that that's the "brain" of it.

Pics-Art-05-29-05-27-06.jpg

It takes up too much space and so I don't think there is enough space for a nose lift kit :nooo:

Going forward I'm hoping to welcome some carbon fibre bits. Certain parts are looking a little worn, such as the handles and some bits of extended leather, so I'll be taking these off, giving them a good clean and condition then putting them in storage.

First off is some GT3RS Carbon door pulls and door window mechanism trim:

I had already purchased and installed a black pair but I have decided to go carbon!

It's been over a year since I posted here so thought it would be fair of me to post an update. Because why not?

As well as the obligatory bits Ssnce the Tractives went in I have done a few little mods.

Purchased a full set of yellow belts, had mine taken out and replaced with these. Chucked my black set into storage.

Really does bring a nice added bit of colour that I'm quite happy with and of course they match pccb calipers and the number plate lol!

IMG_20220721_093625_753.jpg

Had the car in for a major service and full inspection at a 9e where I finally got to meet Ken and Adam. Plus, sorted a few niggly bits. Everything came back OK though ill have to eventually do something about these leaky spoiler rams. Was suggest P-Speed in Germany. Any thoughts?

IMG_20231129_075557_026.jpg

Fast forward a bit, I had the car fully detailed and a 5 year ceramic coating for the winter when I welcomed in some more carbon trim:

IMG_20231129_080843_715.jpg

Really got annoyed seeing the horrible sill plates scuffed and battered from age so got some new sills and finally got rid of them horrible metal plates!

Here's the car at Porsche's by the Lake where I was invited by the porsche specialists Pie Performance (based in Suffolk - do give them try. Highly recommend!) to be at their stand as I had the Tractives installed by them. Managed to get a few snaps that day:

For now the car looks great, sits great and the cabin is feeling even better with the carbon and yellow touches 😀

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I purchased something earlier this week that I havnt seen done to a 997.1tt tip yet!

As a tip owner I have always thought that the shifter just looks.... Shite.

Any guesses? Hint: it comes from the good guys at JCR and has been touched by Royal Steering Wheels 🤐 thats all I'm saying for now but those of you with half a brain will have just searched the part number lol

IMG_20231128_170757.jpg

Not sure if it'll be a straight fit but I'm well versed in CAD modelling to model something that'll make it work.

Will try and keep this thread up-to-date going forward.

this thread is how internet car threads should be-enthusiasts sharing and making the world of 997 turbos a better place!

makes a refreshing change from talking about values...

This forum is full of bad influences ha. I agree especially good to read when someone parts with some in depth knowledge of a subject and theres certainly a few on here that are well versed in 997s!

So here's what was hiding in that box 😁
Shifter for a 718 (982) GT4RS and also used in the 992 GT3

Originally purchased through JCR and retrimmed by Royal Steering Wheels

This is what I purchased:

This is what arrived:

My plan was to undo it from the gt4rs clip and reattach it to a 997 clip but as you can see... The gearstick gator (boot) is a lot shorter than the 997 one so I'll need to source a 997 gator and have it retrimmed again 🤦‍♂️

Also trying to source centre console parts to make it fit:
Front Centre console lower panel 99755324301
Gator boot with clip 997424075

Will remove my tip panel and replace with the manual trim. Also gives me reason to retrim the worn leather handbrake (would love a carbon and alcantara one!) and maybe the steering wheel as well.

One mod I really can't wait to get done. It'll really transform the interior!
Do hope it'll go smoothly!

Can confirm mission complete :) A pdk shifter that operates as per usual on a tiptronic.

Completely bolt on-bolt off, 0 damage! Sat down, designed and 3d printed a few prototypes. Ended up figuring it all out and now I'm super chuffed!

Currently with an old leather boot but I have my eyes set on a refreshed interior this year so looking at retrim options and think I'm siding with some alcantara!

A great looking mod'. (y)

Haha! Just trying to be as cool as you in your vid

We had some technical issues with the recording and is this was what was salvaged from 2 meet ups unfortunately! Much of the nitty gritty didn't make the final cut but we have committed to a 'Part 2' to cover much of what was missed so keep an eye out!

A great looking mod'. (y)

Tyvm! After a couple weeks of trials and tribulations I got it working as OEM intended. Really cool mod! Have posted it elsewhere and have had lots of people either a) intrigued or b) in disbelief! As has been tried many times and all have abandoned ship.

May have to make a seperate post with a video for the disbelievers.

It's really changed the interior and a really nice, subtle touch of yellow too. Super, super happy with this mod!

Thta car is moving Abs. Needs a GT2 bodykit to go with the way it warps down a road :)

As some of you may know, I arranged the UK's first ever group buy supercar photoshoot Sunday just gone.

There was some SPECTACULAR cars on show (obviously Porsche took priority 😝). Notably, there was a 991GT2RSWP, 930 Turbo RUF and multiple 991GT3RS. It was fantastic!

Anyways, here's one I'm happy to share with you all of my pride and joy 😍

Look forward to seeing what else I can get onto stage!! Catch me on insta to see how it went down and next events: 997Abs

Cheers

what a fantastic car!

There is a special place in the asylum for those that modify 911 turbos to go faster 😍
