2012 Cayenne Turbo - engine sound advice

Hi All,

I am a newbie in the Cayenne world, but have been a seasoned 996 owner since 2015 and used to be extremely active on here until a house renovation robbed me of hobbies and time! Lol

So recently had the fortune to add a beautiful 2012 4.8 V8 Cayenne Turbo to the drive way… a car I have lusted after for far too long. It’s a beautiful example, 70K mileage, extremely clean and has been well loved and was spec'ed to an extremely high level when new.

Sadly I incurred an airlock in the dual Power Steering and Suspension Pump early on in ownership due to a mechanics over sight of incorrectly filling the system. This created a horrendous noise, but thankfully was easy to rectify.

However when investigations of this initial issue were underway my Independent garage - who have limited knowledge of this Porsche V8 engine – commented on a slight tensioner rattle noise / chain rattle coming, from the lower sump area between 900rpm and 1100rpm. Where the oil pump resides in the engine.

This noise is consistently repeatable, there is zero metal in oil etc. engine is smooth, powerful, smokeless etc and once driving you’d never hear it, especially with under trays in place etc. – so realistically – it could be a sound that unless, climbing under it with microphone looking for a noise, you’d just assign it to engine noise.

However my paranoia is now in overdrive and I just wanted to know does anyone know if these engines do omit a chain / tensioner rattle from this area of the engine at the described rpm?

Or is there something on these engines to be concerned of?

It’s a first world issue I know – but I am so frustrated, as I am now looking at the car of my dreams – which drives faultlessly, doesn’t smoke, is quiet and is extremely powerful – but can’t help worrying if this is the start of an underlying problem.

The garage (a highly respected independent) also are at a loss and have stressed that from here on out, they’d be changing components to see if this ‘alters' the slight noise – but this approach has already generated £8k estimates.

There are zero issues I can find on here or on Google that relate to this issue either. Plus Porsche parts have never sold a lower oil pump through their parts system in the UK since that model launched - so it’s not like the known Transfer Case issue.

So I am at a loss and would be grateful for any owners or experienced hands of this model to share their experiences.

Or if anyone can recommend a specialist who is well versed in these impressive v8 Twin Turbo Cayenne engines.

Thanks to all in advance for any insights.
