Marky''s 996.2 GT3 thread.

Quick post.

I got the car back on Saturday. Fantastic!
When I set out to tidy it up I thought 'Yeah it'll have a few less stonechips but will pretty much be the same as it was".
It's like a different car now though. I didn't realise how much the areas of chips and gravel rash were spoiling it.
It looks better than I'd hoped. Very happy.

Great picture. Shame we have to have front number plates in the UK.

Love a black 911 👍

Marky!!! How the hell can you sell that now?!?!?!!!!!!

Incredible :worship: :worship: :worship:

Thanks for the comments gents.
I usually answer individually but I'm mad busy at the moment.

Yep they've done a great job on it. I couldn't stop smiling when I went in to collect it. I haven't had that reaction to a car for years, even when I first bought it.

As for selling or keeping. I'm still going around in circles, but it was great to be out in it again on the drive home and it has reminded me a manual box is very important to me in any car, but even more so in a summer fun car.

Plus, a lot of people would kill for that car, so maybe I need to stop being spoilt and learn to be a bit more content with what I have. We'll see.

<off he goes to YouTube to watch some more Ferrari videos>

That good sir, is Porche 996 GT3 porn (and that image alone makes the act of selling it somewhat tricky) :?:

Could I look at that image and be tempted by a 430 ? No chance.

Excellent work, both on your part and your paint guy :)

My goodness me that's gorgeous!

Great job :thumb: :thumb:

Amazing results Mark!

It looks almost too good to drive now :D

...Probably a good time to sell it though :nooo:

Marky, that looks amazing. I have the odd quiet thought now and then about changing for something else, then I go for a drive and think WTF no way, my car exceeds my expectations whenever I get behind the wheel

I just had a thought, maybe you just have the 'wrong' GT3? Maybe a 997.1/2 or 991.2 GT3 would suit you better? Am I going to get stoned by the faithful for even suggesting this? Anything to stop you jumping into a noisy Punto

Looks bloody marvellous. The gap to change will never be shorter. Just sayin' :?:

Bit of a delayed reply here as I was away for the jubilee weekend. Back at work now so I can catch up on the internet.

Cheers Jon.
I'm intrigued now, who is up to what with their Ferrari and is it fun or pain?

Hi Henry
Yes it does look great now. I'm not going to do anything rash. At least not this summer.

Cheers Freddie and Andy

Hi Roro
If I was shopping for a GT3 and didn't already have one then I'd be over the moon with a 996 or 997. I dare say the 997 is more suited to what I do, in that it's a slightly nicer road car.
However I like the purity of the 996s and I certainly couldn't be bothered with selling mine then embarking on a 997 search.
My mate has had every model of GT3 and coming from 996s we both thought the same of the 997. It's just a slightly quicker, slightly larger, more refined car, but not night and day different. Which is obvious I guess.
I do love the centre exit pipes in the '7 though.
As for 991s. It would have to be a gen2 for the manual box, but I think they're just too big and fast for the country roads I drive on up here.
Again though they're brilliant cars, just like the 997, but how fast do we really want to go??

Hey Graham
I hope you're still enjoying yours. True about the jump. Things are fairly favourable at the moment.

Slight update then...

I got the car back looking all lovely but it rained on the way home, even though I postponed collection because it was raining the day before. :frustrated:
I've also had a couple of drives since, meaning brake dust, so it well and truly needs a wash now. I'm hoping it's easier to maintain now though.
I'm going to buy a proper car dryer I think. I was using a vacuum with blow function but think I'll buy a proper one.
Any suggestions welcome.

So the MOT had expired due to all the paintwork and the long wait for PPF.
So on Monday I pulled the car out to finish a few little jobs.

I mainly had to fit the new number plates and get down for a lunchtime MOT.
What should have been a 10 minute job turned into about an hours worth of head scratching as the new plinth I bought was different. It had 4x different fitment holes compared to the old one.
I think the old one was a mk1 version someone had fitted in error years ago, as the plate had always sloped out a smidge towards the bottom.
I got away with just adding 2 more holes to my bumper as there was simply no way to pull the ends in otherwise.
So anyway, new plinth and plates on and away for mot.
It's good to get those Autostore plates off as I don't want to be advertising that place.

The car sailed through its mot. It always just scrapes through on emissions. We have to get it really hot but it usually drops into tolerance after a while. No advisories bar 'under trays fitted" obviously.

So since I was now finally legal for the year ahead I decided to take the long way home.
Whenever I put it on the road in springtime I always do the first few journeys very gently. I like to get a good few heat cycles through the engine before using high revs. So Monday was the first 'proper" drive of the year (even then it doesn't get thrashed mind).

It was brilliant being back out in it. It's easy to forget how good it is when I don't drive it all winter.
Even just at normal speeds you have that gear change plus the motor is pretty characterful even at low revs. You get that thrum of the old air-cooled cars, then when you take the revs up you get a scream that no aircooled car can match.
Pure bliss!

Plus as I glanced around the immaculate cabin I just thought, 'this thing's mint, do I really want to start all over again bringing something else up to scratch?".
The answer is 'No, not this year".
I still have my 205 GTi to get on the road properly and also my old Volvo T5. This month is about the 205 and my R1, then July is for sorting the T5.
So I'm plenty busy enough, in fact too busy, as I still have loads of house stuff to do.

So with that lot in I think I'm keeping it.
I still have such an urge for a Ferrari but as I've said I'm not going to sell my GT3 now, then spend all summer looking for it's replacement, only to garage it for the winter.

The GT3 is done and ready to use whenever I get the time.
It may get a run out down to Oulton Park this weekend as we have Porsche hospitality for the Touring cars and Carrera Cup.
Bit of a motorway drive really though so a bit pointless, plus we may take my mates motorhome so we can go down the night before and chill out.

It's good to be officially on the road again anyway and I'm loving the car. :thumb:
