Hi all,

I appreciated this will have been discussed numerous times but what is the latest recommendation ? 911 Carrera 4S 2004

To summarise :-

New - Porsche recommended 0w40 Mobil
Now - Porsche recommend 5w50

People seem to use 5w40 a lot ?

It's just been serviced prior to my ownership and it's got 5w30 in !

At a loss 😂

Any advice / recommendations to what is suitable would be appreciated and understand I have opened a can of worms so sorry in advance 😂

It usually just comes down to what the OPC or your preferred local Indy decides on as their staple oil choice.

Mine has Mobil1 0w40 in it now because it went to Porsche Specialist Services and that's what they put in.

Prior to that it had Mobil1 5w40 in it because that's what Autostrasse use.

I can't say I've noticed any difference and I don't suppose I ever will.

It pays not to sweat the small stuff.

I personally wouldn't be that happy with 5W30 in the motor, that is significantly thinner than the as new OE fill... What does the oil pressure gauge sit at when the car is hot - when the rad fans come on for example?

Thanks - I think I will certainly change the 5w30 I don't think that's really a suitable option at all ?

Just need to decide now if it's 0w40 / 5w40 or 5w50 😮 although Porsche now say 5w50 so I maybe more inclined to go down that route

Fair enough! As to the new fill... you're best off just flipping a coin to be honest!

I've used 5W40, my car is on 75k which I think of as fairly new, maybe once I get to 100k I'll switch over to 5W50? Thicker oil will be better for more worn bearing surfaces possibly? Who knows, maybe the motor will explode before then!

My take on the oil is that provided you're using a good quality oil and it's thereabouts in terms of viscosity then frequency of change is much more important.

My engine was rebuilt 40K ago by Hartech and they suggest Millers 10/50 for all M96 engine regardess of mileage, so I stick with that.

Not at ~7deg average ambient temps, it's not. And it's unlikely to be particularly affected by our summer, either.

My car has done 105,000 miles and my Porsche Independent has put Mobil Super 3000 5w40 in it.

that's what AMS Porsche put in mine after a rebuild and the initial run in.

My 2012 C4S has covered 42k miles before I got my hands on it it has had quite a few registered owners in that time, but it did have a full Porsche history right up to the last intermediate service which was performed by a recognised Porsche indy, who advertises as using Mobil oils... I recently jumped through hoops to have it accepted onto the Porsche extended warranty scheme, which requires only Porsche spec servicing for as long as I wish to insure it under that scheme... That Porsche`s insurers will continue cover my C4s up to circa14 years old and 140k miles or so, using only Porsche`s choice of oils, then I suspect there is little incentive to choose otherwise..?

At the time Porsche changed from Shell to Mobil, I wrote to Porsche to have them confirm that this new oil was entirely suitable for use in my then 80K mile 911 SC They were kind enough to write back and provided all sorts of data to confirm that Mobil was indeed suitable for older Porsches... Who am I to argue with that..?

Good luck in your choices.. :thumb:

I have run my 2002 C4S on Millers 10w50 nanodrive for around 5 years but noticed that it smoked a little on cold start up in winter.Changed back to Mobil 1 0w40 and the smoking has stopped. No idea why it smoked using the thicker oil.

I use Mobile 5-40 as advised by my Indy for the 996, and have also use the same oil in my Boxster which I have had from new it's a 1997 and has done 211k miles with no work done to the engine or gearbox, I do change the oil every 5k miles and I think this is more important than the type of oil, which is why my engine has done ballistic mileage.
