My (1998) 3.4 moves off in first gear on initial start up, but within a half mile generally moves off from second gear unless floored.
HOWEVER! .. My pals (2003) 3.6 ALWAYS moves off in second gear unless floored.

Is there a design change on second gen 996's?

My Gen2 car only ever pulled away in first the first time after being started up so it might be that he's just not noticing it.

The 3.6 will use 1st when engine cold. Once it starts to warm up will default to using 2nd. I have always been told to manually change to 1st to pull away as this should help prevent bore scoring.
