Any suggestions on the best way to protect underneath of a Boxster driven daily through winter (aside from 'don't'!!)? Is there a clear coating or system available or just the black goo?

As usual, it depends how much corrosion there is already and how far you want to go with the job but there's no doubt more preparation gives longer lasting results. A full decontamination of the underside would be best but for that you'd either need a heated garage or to leave it 'til the warmer weather next year and just keep jet washing with an underbody lance this year.

If you don't want the aggro and want to just go ahead now, you could simply remove any obvious loose rust, protect the exhaust, disks and callipers and spray everything else.

Waxoyl: Long established - used it for nearly 40 years myself and never had a problem, using both the clear wax and underseal (black) versions - spray suspension and fasteners with clear waxoyl and use the underseal for high impact areas. The only problem is it works best in the summer, when it's less viscous and can flow into all the nooks and crannies.

Dinitrol: Long established (80+ years) manufacturer of anti-corrosion treatments. A lot of folks swear by this stuff (especially in classic car circles) but I've never used it myself - that said, I'd have no hesitation in doing so, I just tend to stick to what's worked for me in the past.

Bilt Hamer: Favoured by detailers - offers a range of rust protection products, including an anti-rust converter called Hydrate 80 and a clear wax protection coating called Dynax UC.

Hope that helps
