Shanty's 997.1 GT3

Maybe, strange its never surfaced again, such a rare car .......but loving the 987 roady as my little toy ...so much more in keeping with the Z3 than the grown up 981 was

Anyway you need to get this thread back on topic with some actual updates on your GT3 :bandit:

Loved that car......

I always liked the two tone seats in the Z3s they looked more special! Lovely looking car and a cool story to go with it!

I do wonder where it is now, he put it through an auction around 6 months later and it sold for just under £30k which by itself I think would have made it the most expensive Z3 roady in the UK but was only a fraction of what he paid me......lets just say it was pocket change to him

Further OT but it was for sale at Redline Specialist Cars approx 2 or 3 years ago, still had all the mods on. Not the type of car they tend to sell really, assume they had it as a trade in. They had it for a month or so, guess it could be them who put it to auction.

They know the owner well and he asked them to sell it for him, as you say not their normal product but lets just say he is probably their best customer, they get a lot of their normal stock from him ! .......yep it went to auction which they arranged for him

Well no news is often good news. I've thoroughly enjoyed driving the car over summer and into early winter. A lot of time has been spent cleaning up the garage ready for hibernation. I also dropped the car into OPC Bournemouth for a minor service pre-sleep which came back with a nice clean bill of health.

Well over a year ago since I last updated this thread.

Made my way up to Snetterton for my first track day, the car was incredible even on P4S tyres well past their best. I had major PCCB anxiety though so kept it to relatively short sessions with plenty of cool down / warm up laps.

The bad news: Towards the end of the day I chose to make use of a couple of laps with an instructor, which involved lots of orders being barked at me, when to change gear, how to brake and position the car etc... closing in on a hair pin right I went to put the car into second and hadn't fully dipped the clutch, which caused me to grind the gear....unfortunately this was enough to damage a synchro (it would seem). From this point forward the car wouldn't go into 2nd on downshifts without blipping or letting revs settle. It consistently grinds.

The car is now booked in at Mike (Sports Classic) for a gearbox strip down...An expensive mistake. Apparently the GT3 has brass synchros for first/second, the rest are steel. My hope is the softer synchros have protected the gearset but we will see.

The gear oil has already been dropped/renewed confirming a shard of brass synchro in the pan....

Moving on with better news

I've always fancied a tequipment rollbar, I think it's a nice compromise where you can still make use of the rear seats for storage, and the option to run harnesses in the future. One popped up on here in new condition still wrapped in its original foam, not cheap but it's a discontinued part so I took the leap

After some very very careful manoeuvring I managed to get the roll bar in without cracking windshields or damaging the interior, not a job I would repeat again in a hurry!

Next up

Some RSS engine mounts, a little more noise at idle, I can't say I have noticed much else although the car has been left mainly stationary whilst the gearbox needs attention.

The car also had an oil service, brake fluid change, drive belts and some titanium bleed nipples to avoid any seizing problems going forward.

Finally even with the garage upgrades/repairs I wanted the car to sit in as dry a condition as possible, especially for winter months, so I upgraded my carcoon to a Veloce for an all year drive in, drive out experience

One more thing....I decided to treat both cars to a headlight polish/lacquer at the local bodyshop. Over 200,000 miles between them so about time!

Whilst the Porsche awaits its repair the Honda has been picking up the slack for track time (and modifications), which will hopefully lead to less mistakes when I finally get the guts to put it back on track!!

Good to see an update Shanty.

Sorry to hear about the box. These things happen eh.
Nice to see the tequipment hoop going in. A GT3 without scaffolding is like Yorkshire puddings without gravy.

S2000 is still looking good and those carcoons are great aren't they. My 911 is away in storage so my R1 and 205 GTi are currently in mine.

Anyway, your car still looks great and I hope your box repair is as painless as possible. :thumb:

Lovely looking car! I hope the gearbox is ok....

I've never heard of titanium bleed nipples before, but it makes complete sense. I'm was just about to do a brake fluid flush as part of the winter maintenance, so good timing! Thanks 8)

Shame about the faux pas with that shift. Stuff happens and you've given it to one of the best in the biz to sort. IME experience there's usually additional stuff to do once the get the box open, fore warned is fore armed and all that.

I get the coolness of the bar but adding a harness won't be easy without swapping seats. A few things to be aware of are side belt and sub belt mounts, there are none in the non clubsport spec car, your stock seat obviously has no pass through either for crotch and shoulder. So, if you're going that route you need to consider buckets and a seat mount that will let you hook up lap and sub belts to it. :thumb:
