It's time for engine out and rebuild it.

Is it much cheaper to let Pie Performance do the engine work rather than have them just send the entire engine up to Hartech to do all the work?

I know other indies who have their own engine rooms but when an M96 or M97 engine comes in they just send it off to Hartech or one of the other M96/M97 specialist engine builders. Better for warranty etc no?

Pie did my stock 3.4 re assembly & install. It was only slightly cheaper than having Hartech put it back together, but being warrantied very locally was a big plus. For provenance I did get a file of pictures of the Hartech work to go with their invoice. As I did notwant to send the whole car up to Bolton, and I did have quite a list of ‘while we are in there’ work it made sense. Not a descision I have regretted at all.

As long as nothing goes wrong there is never an issue. If say a Hartech component fails or vice versa or in the future what exactly causes a failure say 12000 miles and 10 months down the line thats when someone finds out if they've made the correct choice. If the engine lasts 100k miles and 10 years happy days.

What sort of warranty does Pie give a customer vs say Hartech? Interested as would like a 996 C2 and I hear many will need a rebuild at some stage. Pie not far from me too.

warranty was I think 24 months. The 500 mile running in oil & filter change was also thrown in.

Good point about a component failure / who is to blame type disaster. I did ponder that, but having spoken to Hartech I decided that the level of Pie collaboration they are comfortable with should also comfort me. Plus Pie have always been very decent to deal with and clearly very keen to build their reputation. A small example of that being a top mount fitted by them developing a creaking noise just after its one year warranty expired - they replaced the pair with zero quibble & without the slightest hint that they were doing me a favour waiving all labour charges.

Not wanting to tempt fete, but my engine is 30 months old and has done just shy of 20k miles.

Bananaz Both you and I did the same thing, that way, you can have the colour, options list and model you want. When or if the engine needs work then you know the time has come to spend big time. All.you have to hope and pray that the IMS does not spoil your plans !.
My IMS was the original so all 8 owners before me did not take any notice of the scare mongering that goes on.

Rival38 thanks for the input. Pie will be doing several hundred miles on the new engine before handing it over to me, just so that they can check it out for any issues.
On the subject of a colosal failure before the warranty is up will be a little more complicated as two company's have had some input. So fingers crossed I dont go down that road.

While the car has had the engine removed, I could not resist taking the rear anti roll bar, the two diagonal strength bars, and both gear box support brackets home to remove the paint wire brush them and treat them to 6 coats of paint, and return them when asked for.

I'm thinking to do something similar over the winter, did you just put paint on or also a sealant/clearcoat? (forgive me if those terms are completely wrong... :) )

I used an enamel paint that I have used in the past as it gives a brilliant ,hard finish that bodes well for these parts that are often untouched for the life time of the car.
I use a primer, under coat and then a top coat, there is also a clear coat that protects the paint from uv rays, but unless you do something rather silly like turn the car over, they are unlikely to see much sun, I did not use it.
I give the parts two coats of every different paint and flat them down with 400grit wet and dry, between coats. This might sound over the top, but when you follow these instructions you will be very happy with the results.
The paint is from craftmaster, look it up if you chose to go down this path.
Hope this is of some use to you.

Patients is a virtue, but I popped into my indy today to pick up some new bushes to go on the two diagonal braces.
At the same time Pie reported that Hartech had finished machining the blocks and they were ready to ship them back to us , along with the piston's, piston pins, low temp. thermostat, support lower ring's, performanse big end bearings, and performance main bearings.only £7,692.

Any idea which brand Hartech uses for the low-temperature thermostat?

Hi droptop, I dont know at present, however, I will find out and let you know when it arrives from Hartech, .

The next job, when this package comes back from Hartech, the heads will go off to be pressure tested to make sure all is well. And then, when all parts are on site rebuilding will commence.

Thanks Mark! That's defintely a nice winter project 😊

It has been some time since I added to this "thread", but I have just been down to Pie performance to see the wooden crate from Hartech undone for the fist time since it arrived back from them.
Inside was two block halves, a set of pistons, main and big end bearings and a low temp. thermostat.
