First 996...a few questions

So i took the plunge on a 2004 high mile 996 Turbo (tiptronic). Theory being they are fairly robust, upgradeable and the low cost entry point gives me headroom to spend some on it.

I have a couple of quick questions if anyone can help:

1) tuning

I really just want a nice road car. I am not going to track it. I am getting 0.6 bar and would like it more linear/less lag..not even sure i need more speed/power. I believe an ECU tune with no further changes (dvs, different cat) would probably achieve this. Thoughts?

2) cobb stage 1 OTS tune vs softronic

For the above...would either of these do? Cobb seems to be a bit less and more versatile if not as punchy with an OTS tune

3) softronic resale....is there an easy way to know if a softronic has already been used and married to a VIN?

4) suspension....I don't know what normal is like in a 996/sports car...but this car hits every bump. Both rears reported "light misting of oil"...so probably needs replacing. I am not going to track it. I dont need adjustability...though will take it if its not much extra. I would like a softer ride but good for fast roads. I dont need a lowered look...if anything i have scuffed the splitter numerous times and would rather lift or be able to air lift it.

Loving the car and excited about the future if a little daunted about the money pit.

Rgds

At the age its at it most likely needs a suspension refresh. Shockers will make a massive difference if they're the originals that are on. I recently did coffin arms, shocks, front top mounts, rear control arms and full geo set to speck. The shocks made a massive difference on handling and bumps, etc. The arms didn't really need doing but you'll find the eccentric adjustment bolts have most likely seized in them so you have no option to replace when you need to set your geo.

I just have the standard shocks and I'm very happy with the handling now. Keep your eyes peeled on the usual sites and you can get some decent prices for them. That includes members selling them on here. I bought some standard Porsche rear shock brand new off another member for half price.

:welcome: to 911uk. A great first 911 and a brilliant road car. :thumb:

If you're only getting 0.6 bar the car definitely needs some basic attention. I'd get a specialist to sort that out before contemplating anything else.

Good Luck

ps. Out of curiosity, how high is the mileage. :?:

Thanks for the replies

It is a lovely thing...very pleased to get started on this journey.

T8 - it has done 150k miles. So hefty...but i read a few discussions about therm going much further. Was willing to trade a discount for that risk.

As regards pressure..might understanding was 0.6 was about par for a stock 996TT...but yeah, I am getting it inspected and boost leak checked in 2 weeks.

Alex - i have a heap of paperwork to recheck...but i thinknits the original shocks. Is it important to do all 4 or can you just do rear as that seems to be the problem and i heard less labour to change. Are bilstein b4's the stock shock?

I did my fronts as I had an advisory on the MOT it was weeping. Made the handling and hard braking atrocious. The back end was wafting all over the place everytime you did anything extreme. Did the rears and it made it perfect. Don't know if it would be the same the other way round. I'd maybe do the rears and see what its like.

Edit: I have Bilsteins on the front but can't remember the number, but they're the standard ones.

Rears are easy to do, front are a biatch, so you may just want to try doing the rears.

On another note, just nipped to the post office in mine and noticed the mileage so took a snap:

Yep it was some of those mileage figures that gave me the confidence/excuse my brain needed to roll the dice.

Will aim to just do the rear end suspension first I think.

Make sure you do your rear drop links at the same time as they're a doddle with the shock change but a nightmare any other time.

Hi leak test and fix them all it made a massive difference to the performance then I had a Markski tune to finish it off
