Breakdown (European included) cover now ADAC cannot be used?

After breaking down last year on my way home from Europe that will be the last time I can renew with ADAC and my current policy with them expires on the 4th April.

So I'm now in need of decent breakdown cover, I also haven't yet re-insured my 996 so this could be included with an Insurance policy but I would rather have something I can run separate to my Insurance as I change Insurance companies most years and would like to keep renewing the breakdown cover separately, I would also want it to cover multiple vehicles if possible?

I have spoken to my bank and they have said I can get breakdown through them, with their monthly fees but it doesn't include European travel and that is a must, so they have been eliminated from my list so far?

Anyone have a good company to recommend? Basically I want the same cover ADAC were giving me without paying silly money for it?

I was in the same boat.

Bought a policy of GEMS for UK stuff.

Then bought a policy from the RAC to cover each Euro trip on a per car per day basis. They were the only ones I could find that did a no quibble cover on vehicles as old as I needed to cover. For European cover it always pays to check the small print if your car is over seven years old.

I couldn't find a policy that covered the person. We really were spoiled with the ADAC cover weren't we! I was with them for ten years - only called them out once.

The youngest vehicle I took across last year was 8 years old - the oldest - 31!

I got a couple of tips with regards to breakdown companies from my engine thread but I thought it better for this to have its own thread.

As you mention it is also the age of my vehicles, 20 and 35 years old, I know of some decent policies that will do up to 15 years old but it gets more specialised after that.

We were spoilt with ADAC and anything comparable in the UK is silly money. I will see what I can get when I get some Insurance quotes but like I said I would rather keep it separate to the Insurance.

I'd never had any bother getting cover with ADAC, then a couple of years ago they just said they wouldn't renew my policy anymore. Can't think why

When I tried other places it seems that if your car is over 15 years old your choices are very limited and you pay through the nose for it. I used Eurotunnels single trip cover a couple of times which was about £20-£30 per trip from memory, but they've limited that to 16 year old vehicles too now apparently. This was all last year so I would imagine 'taking back control' isn't going to have improved things.

It's not Brexit if that's what you think.

The change applied to everyone outside outside Germany, not just the Brits.

Yeah I take it back - I've just checked and you now need a German address. Apparently if you are an existing member outside Germany you can carry on being a member but if you call them out, once your yearly membership is up they won't renew it.

Have you got a link to the European breakdown on that site Teffers? I might be being a bit thick but I can only see U.K.

The travel pack Barclays offer is still only £12.50/month. Sounds a bit pricey but when you take into account it also covers holiday Insurance as well as breakdown cover for both you and your partner even if you're not with her when she needs to use it. Add on to that the fact you can open a joint account with a mate (for example someone on a Eurohoon with you), get the travel pack and you're both covered as well as your partners. So that's 4 people with comprehensive breakdown cover and travel Insurance across Europe. It also covers your kids too if you have any. Minimum term is 6 months, so £75 if you only do it for that length. RAC provide the breakdown cover.

Does look good, even at £150 a year it should be worth it, I can't see an age limit for cars either? Do you need to bank with them and have a certain amount put into an account monthly?

You do need to have an account with them but I'm not sure on how much activity you need with it. Sometimes worth having an account like this just as your car pot. Bung a DD in every month then just use it for paying for Insurance, tax, parts, etc.

I was told there is no age limit on the car and it's the person who the policy applies to and not the car, so you can use them for any car you're in so long as it's not the usual hire, business car etc.

Just had a good read and spotted they've added this in which wasn't in when I took it out 2 years ago. Just off to cancel it!!! :nooo:

Your eligible vehicle must also:

- be under 11 years old at the start of the
journey

Cars, motorcycles 121cc or over, estate cars, MPVàs or 4 x 4 sport utility vehiles which are aged 11 years and over may be covered on payment of a supplement, which will be collected at the time of breakdown.

I have this too, but watch their limits on the holiday Insurance. I had a fancy holiday to South America two years ago and had to pay an additional premium to get the full cost of the holiday covered. I have been paid on flight delay before and had them out for cars other than the 993.

The AA cover vehicles of any age from £7 per day.

One of the guys who was in our group went on a Euro hoon and got a ruptured clutch hyd pipe in Germany. He had no cover at all and even tried to phone a company to take out cover there and then but they told him to get raffled!
Ended up costing him thousands as he had to leave the car, fly home, return in a week, pick up the car pay for the repairs and recovery and then drive back!

Irony is he does video blogs advising people on what to buy for their Porsche cars, shame he forgot about Euro travel cover!

I have used the RAC per trip cover before. I though it was reasonable and easy.

My classic line Insurance policy included UK and EU breakdown cover as standard. Homestart too in the UK.
