At last - engine oils explained

One of the topics that gives me most headaches are the different engine oil options. Now very timely, EngineeringExplained has done another one of his great YouTube videos covering oils in a simple way that works for me.

Timely because previous to my buying the car, it used Porsche Classic 20w-50 on recommendation by OPC (despite Porsche themselves saying 993 should be classic 10w-60), whereas new specialist indy is recommending 5w-40 (Mobil Super 3000) and handbook says something else. Too confusing for my poor brain, and just regular driving around use.

Just wanted to share in case it saves someone else's brain-melt too. Meantime I already decided to go with indy recommendation a few days before video was released, after my brain had already melted.

I've never understood why people often recommend changing from 0w40 to 5w40 oils on here!

The Engineering Explained channel on YouTube is great, I've learned lots from him too.

You will always find conflicting views on oil, an OPC had filled my 993 with 0w-40 in 2018 when with the previous owner, and after a little research I've opted for something little thicker when cold @ 10w-40.

There are quite a few considerations here including the improvement of oil tech in 26 years and ageing engines so the original service book won't always recommend the optimal modern oil.

Ultimately the choice is yours but DYOR and take good, experienced advice.

Hi

Interesting video. So as far as oil leaks are concerned its not the lower number that matters.
