997.2 turbo diamond cut alloys - bad news?

Morning guys

I’m now at the stage where my 997.2 is mechanically sorted (pre-emotive work completed now too) had a few issues but all tip top so drives like it should. I’m now about to start the in depth detailing stages (pictures to follow shortly)

Before I start I wanted to get the alloy wheels perfect as there are some small ‘milking’ marks on the near side front (see pics)

Yesterday I contacted a very good ally wheel refurb company who were very honest and said that they would re-diamond cut the wheel but it would only last a year or two before the ‘milking would eventually return, normally from within, as in any minutely small amount of air trapped under the lacquer would eventually blister through (and always does)

I just wanted to double check in case this is not the case, I could even suck up paying for this to be done every two years but you can only diamond cut a wheel maybe 2 or 3 times in its life.

I love the lobster claw alloys and don’t want to have them any other colour, anyone know of a solution to keep them mint and OEM?

Best wishes

The reality is that the ‘white worm’ issue can recur even after refurbishing properly.

Worst scenario is getting it powder coated if it comes to that in the future.

One of mine had a similar issue and was refurbished recently.

Avoid harsh wheel cleaning stuff . I am unsure whether a coating of G techniq or similar would help to protect the wheels.

The Chinese copies are now a reasonable price and only very slightly heavier ... you can't tell they're copies till you look at the reverse.

I have exactly the same issues with mine, but the trusted alloy wheel specialist has told me they cannot be refurbished again as a diamond cut so would have to be powder coated in a single colour. Has anyone done this to the Turbo 2 alloy? - would be interested to see the finish.

Also - can you share a link to the Chinese alternative?

Thanks
G

Double post - sorry

I'd agree, I've had a few sets of wheels like this (BMW and others mostly). So I'd personally get them polyester powder coated. You'd have to chose a single colour though, but it would be very hard wearing.

You shouldn't refer to these as the Lobster Claw wheel, they're not, they are Turbo 2 wheels. I really like those wheels, but I really (really!) hate the Lobster Claws which were used on early gen 1 997's. Those are at the bottom of the pile IMO, along with the 997 Turbo 1 wheel

Great feedback thanks, the Design 911 ones look like a good option.

Does anyone have picture of the Turbo 2 alloy in the single colour after it has been powder coated? I would like to see what that actually looks like.

Cheers

In black as an example

Thanks guys that’s really interesting (and informative, Turbo 2 from now on then☺️)

Some good options, the Design911 ones look superb! Are they diamond cut or polished?

I was a member of M3 Cutters where a few people had the 19” E46 M3 wheels faces polished then coated, they looked sublime. Does anyone know if the T2 alloys could have the same treatment?

I don’t fancy a one colour wheel as the original diamond cut faces look so good.

I'm the same re one colour, although if I was able to see a grey or silver one that looked decent I might be swayed.

Looks like maybe aftermarket - ideally HRE or BBS or the Design 911 replicas for me.

I’m a bit of a wheel ***** and love a good set of split rims BBS RS LM Etc. Anyway the dishes on split rims always do the same milk thing even when new on cars in the 80s / 90s

When refurbing these wheels most guys either hand polish the alloy dishes or fit new alloy or stainless dishes. They leave them in bare alloy to avoid milking and just hand polish them with autosol or similar

You can even strip the clear coat off the parts you want to polish on your wheels without impacting the remaining black paint if you wanted them hand polished

It’s hard work but worth it
