2011 cayenne - good deal or a headache waiting to happen?

New to the forum,
Just after some advice, I have test driven a cayenne 61 plate 3 litre diesel. It's done 50k miles and the asking price is £20k. I want to buy it but I ma hesitant because the car is 9 years old.
My question is, how should I proceed? Get a pre purchase inspection? Or don't I need one if I buy the 12 month warranty (approx £500).
Are there likely to be problems with a 9 year old cayenne?

Any advice welcome.

Aftermarket warranties .. hmm paper and written on spring to mind as someone who deals with claims on these " policies "

Gold star warranty perhaps or is it just the silver for that amount of money .

Sorry .. i'm rather cynical when it comes to actually claiming on these , they usually have an upper limit .. 1-2k , they expect the earth when it comes to proving something is covered .. garages working on your behalf only have so much time and patience to deal with the paperwork and very quickly get fed up .

AA warranty , rac warranty or porsche warranty .. each have their issues but these are some of the better ones .

You need to read the small print .

Ok then .. PPI is needed .. do you really want to spend 20 grand on a car thats not been independently checked ?? .. i know i wouldn't.

The car itself is ok .. oil leaks , dpf issues which are ok if you do a long journey at least once per month .. if just short journeys then dont bother with a diesel of any make .

Oil leak o/s of the engine is often the through bolts , OPC and its circa 9K to repair .. indys can fix for a few hours labour .

Overall they have no set problems other than the above.
 
I do like Porsche, but for a big 4x4 I have always gone Range Rover. I have had my current one coming up on 4 years, bought on 48k, now on 93k I think. Bits have gone wrong but have been fixed. I just like them.

Yes it's the aa gold star warranty. I was under the impression that a PPI wouldn't be necessary if I had the 12 month warranty?

Do you think it's worth buying? Or at least getting a PPI then buying?

I like range rover but Keep hearing from people that they are expensive to repair.
Would you recommend a PPI before buying one? Otherwise it's a gamble right?

£20K is a lot of money , i would always say get a ppi done .. it may save you a fortune or at worst cost you an extra few hundred .

Warranty will wriggle out of any claim inside of 3 months .. they will just argue it was sold with the defect and as such you need to go back to the seller .

Yes I figured the warranties might not be worth *****. But I read some independent reviews of the sellers garage and it was mentioned a few times that any problems with the cars they sold were taken back and fixed in house without any hesitation.
 
I had an AA Gold warranty on a Boxster about 10 years ago. Wasn't worth the paper it was written on. Wriggled out of every job listed by OPC. £1700 for a 3 year warranty. Waste of money.
 
I've seen the AA and indeed RAC warranties pay out when i wasn't expecting it .. i've also seen the total reverse as an item that was obviously covered and they didn't pay out ...

If there was more consistency either way i would know whether to recommend or not .. but i'm afraid both of these are luck of the draw when it comes to claims ..

Porsche is also .. but imho its still the best there is .
 
I agree with de Mort. You need to get a PPI done by an expert, use the results of that to negotiate the price downwards and then take it to a reputable Porsche specialist for any remedial work to be done and for ongoing servicing.

If you get a good one (the PPI will confirm that) and have it maintained properly, the chances of having to make a claim on any warranty will be greatly reduced.

Warranties are generally not worth the money imo and the Porsche one means that you have to use genuine Porsche parts and get it serviced within the Porsche dealer network. If you have deep pockets then go for it but otherwise I suggest you don't bother!
 
I did a lot of research into 4x4's and the Porsche was surprisingly reliable, things do go wrong, but not as many things as a Range Rover, my friend was a mechanic at a Jaguar landrover , and he left because he couldn't earn his bonus because the new parts he had to fit were breaking, and the special tools would break as well . just read the reviews they are not good.
