yeh, protected ncb is ludicrous, your crash is flagged up for the whole world to see, so why pretend?
Protected NCB is supposed to let you keep your NCB after an accident, not remove the actual accident from your history.
So, for example, when my wife had a crash, she had 5 years NCB. She didnt have them protected, so the
Insurance company took off 3 years for the crash - which resulted obviously in an increased premium. Of course, the fact that she had now had an accident within the last 5 years also increased her premium again. So effectively it was increased twice. Had she had protected her NCB (30quid a year I think they wanted), she would still have had 5 years NCB and whilst her premium would have increased as a result of the accident, it wouldnt have increased by anywhere near as much.
