3.6 C2 ownership thread

The pcm as we all know is poor, my car has nav but its well out of date, I dont have the phone module, my cd collection is gathering dust in the loft and my mrs talks over the radio !

So I decided to do away with the lot and ordered the double cubby from Kendal Porsche

Quick check on YouTube how to get the old unit out then 15 minutes later and jobs done.

I quite like minimal options and base spec cars and I bet the cubby will hold loads of cola cubes 👍🏻

All the best

Love this thread!
Interesting change... not sure I could live without a stereo personally. alos my OCD would want to either paint the cubby the same as the AC unit, or the other way around :thumb:

It actually blends in pretty well as most of the upper dash is black, I have been contemplating going black on the lower control panels, off season jobs, I'd have to get spares though as I only do mods that can be reversed simply.

Must admit that I nipped to PCGB R3 show yesterday and I was surprised how many times I tried to put the radio on :hand:

nice work. and you drove it too!

the PCM is awful in these and just makes me laugh.

use it to play CDs but that's it. Phone for Sat nav

:floor:

Part boredom and part preparation for the next 997 job , radiators, I spent the day refreshing my axle stands...

All the best

Thank you very much for sharing your hard work and attention to detail, I've spent over an hour reading every post and comment and marvelled at the pictures, I'm looking forward to seeing the car in the flesh at an upcoming event or show !

Is there any way you could put together a list of all assosciated clips and fasteners for the full frontal assault ? I'd like to tackle mine in the not too distant but as has happened in the past there's always something that gets mangled or snapped in the refitting process,

Keep up the good work and please keep posting :worship:

i'm looking forward to your "haynes manual" detailed approach on swapping your rads out.
I've kept putting mine off as i'll have to do mine outside and the weather has been pants!
and i'm lazy of late

When I get round to doing the rads I'll post a list of part numbers, there will definately be several parts listed that wouldnt be required in just a 'failed" radiator swap as I've ordered basically everything associated with the rads and pipework , this wouldnt be the case with a leaking rad etc

Part of me want to get stuck into the job starting the next week or so but I'm hoping to do the end of season Porsche show in Germany organised by Ingo that does the Dinslaken show every May 1st. I've got my tunnel and hotels booked but its a toss between using the 997 or my wifes rough and ready boxster as the weather may not play ball in mid October.

All the best

The weather won't play ball all thro the summer so October could be more miss than hit, I picked mine up about a month ago in some of the worst weather I've driven In, I drove back thro Whaley Bridge that weekend the dam looked like it was going to burst, and it rained pretty much every day after pick up including the 60 mile journey to have it serviced !

The rain isn't so bad, it's all the debris that's washed off the fields into the roads that create the filth. For a trip to Germany though, to show off your engineering capability and dedication to keeping it all stock standard and tip top I'd take the elfer
👍

So this afternoon I got the car up on four stands and decided to make a start pulling parts off, I think it was down to pure boredom more than a need to make a start.

Anyway just a few images, nice to find original factory marking 84A on the front, paint code for Guards Red

With hindsight I should have got DG Porsche to vac the AC down when I was over there last week, I'll have to find someone mobile to do it or just vent to atmosphere which I'd rather not do.

Cheers, Paul

So yesterday after a brief trip into Keswick so the mrs could buy a jacket, note , the lakes is not a place for a brief visit on a hot bank holiday weekend, it was swiftly back to continue removing parts.

With the a/c now vac'd down I first removed the condensors, of the four retaining bolts two were seized solid, yet again non compatable materials, steel into aluminium, as they were being replaced I simply cut the head off the bolt leaving the thread in the condensor and not damaging the a/c pipework.

Then I popped the two most visible and easily accessable hose clips on the crossover pipe and caught any coolant, I plan to change a couple of the lower hoses on the engine as well so it will probably end up with a full drain down at some point.

On the photo note the corrosion occurring on the hose sleeve, this end was into the plastic coupling behind the radiator.

It was then simply a case of disconnecting the electrical connections, always a pain imo, then pulling the rad packs from the car after removing the easily accesible nuts and bolts.

Working out in the sunshine, a rare occurance in the North, I further stripped the rads into their component parts, the plastic shrouds are nice and undamaged so they'll get a good detailing, the actual metal brackets that carry the rads will be going for powder coating.

After that I seperated the ARB, coffin arm and control arm from the front subframe and began loosening the bolts in order to drop the frame out for vapour blasting, next job will be to break the hose connections at the rear of the subframe and unbolt the rack, I hope this allows the subframe to drop in one piece complete with attatched pipework.

That would have taken place today but my aching body is telling me to have a day off !!

All the best

Back on it this afternoon, few nuts and bolts removed and out with the front subframe with the pipes still connected.

I was planning to re-use the plastic pipes but having now seen the corrosion on the metal sleeve in the connection I'm certain I wouldnt be 100% confident in them next time around so I've banged a pair on order.

I've now got a nice little collection of parts for my powder coater to be on with as well as blasting the subframe.

In the meantime I'll give everything under the front end a good clean and polish, I'll be checking the PAS pipework and hoping all's well so a coat of ACF50 will be applied.

Cheers

Cheers
