My extinguisher arrived from Germany this afternoon, managed to pick up two for £60, same 1kg Gloria as the Porsche one but red top instead of black.

So this fitted set me back £80 for the three genuine seat brackets from Porsche, £16 for the plastic tray, strap and bracket from VW and £30 for the extinguisher. Bar the colour of the cap and a slight difference in the strap it is identical to the Porsche set up of which there is a second hand one on Ebay for nearly £500 which is also missing two brackets.

Ruddy, this is a really enjoyable thread. It's extremely satisfying to see such a clean car. Must be doubly so to actually do it all yourself. Please keep updating it!

I am assuming you are having some parts dry-ice blasted to get such a factory-fresh look?

Thanks, with a job like this it has to be hands on, paying an hourly rate to an indie to remove, clean or replace perfectly good parts would be a non starter, cheaper to buy a new 911 !

As to the finish its a mix between new items where cleaning/refurbishment approaches the replacement cost, lots of hands on cleaning prior to media blasting or vapour blasting and a mix of painted/powder coated items.

Most parts, even new, have had a light coat of satin laquer just to seal the raw metal from the elements.

Majority of nuts/bolts have been replaced with genuine fasteners, even nuts etc that are supplied with the new arms are replaced as the finish is not the original finish, often too shiney, I think this can be seen on one of the images.

Its certainly eaten a lot more cash than I intended but its no point doing half a job, I hope to go through the cooling system next and replace all the necessary items.

The car has already had a tandem pump, water pump, clutch, IMS seal , RMS and coil packs, all the exhaust has been changed including the manifolds (tubular manifolds, top gear 200 cell cats, 1" gundo).

None of the work was prompted by failure or issue but as a time served me hanical engineer in the nuclear industry I believe in pre-emptive maintenance .

Cheers, Paul

The attention to detail level is nuts. I love it.please keep updating this thread.

Also if you have the part numbers for the VW and Porsche parts for the fire extinguisher setup it would be helpful to a lot of us and save us money as well.

Caliper resto completed today, full kit of seals etc from Bigg Red £22

I'll pop up the fire extinguisher part numbers, just need to check the invoices

Nice work - totally inspired by this.

How did you go about stripping the suspension set up down to be able to remove the strut?? I assume you needed spring clamps etc. Any info or tips you have on the strip down would be greatly appreciated and please share if you can.

Nice one

NH

Compared to other suspension set up's I've dismantled it is very simple, the coil spring has negligable stored energy once off the car although I did put compressors on whilst I undid the top nut. When I put the new top mount on I simply compressed the unit by hand to get the nut started.

Torque wrench is a necessity as it should be with most work on these cars.

There was a days panic when my hub went MIA in Yodel's van but arrived at lunchtime today.

Probably have a week off and start the final corner next week.

Cheers, Paul
