I ran over this fkin thing , the bang was horrendous , i hit it full on while accelerating , one wheel seems to have what looks like a light mark as though its been bent and come back in to shape , it feels ok to drive but i am concerned that my wheels are going to fall off :dont know:
Also the top mount rubber has lifted ( see pics to the right of my finger ) is this normal or would you put it down to hitting the cats eye ? , im going for a long drive on Sunday and again on Monday so just a bit worried , what would you do ??

Cheers Keith

Hi Keith,

That's could have ended up being really nasty

Report it immediately to the relevant council in charge of that patch of road and tell them you intend to make a claim for the damage caused.

Keep the cat's eye but you will also need to go back to the area where you think its from an photograph the hole. Obviously if it's a busy patch just report it to the police instead and ask for a reference number for your claim. Citizens Advice will help.

Good luck,
Paul

Hi Keith, that's a real impact wound. Sorry you had this.
Which local authority road did this happen on? The ability to get a claim paid depends on your ability to prove negligence in their maintenance plan - not easy. Write to report the accident and ask for a copy of their records. Any loose cats-eye would imply poor maintenance but they may claim theft by a third party?
As far as your car is concerned, the tyre needs to come off to check the integrity of the rim and tyre. A 'blue' dye may locate any crack not visible to the eye. Then the upper rubber mount needs close inspection. Is the other mount similar? If you hit the cats-eye square, the rim may be safe to drive, you may need to discuss the issue with your insurer before you can know if a claim is necessary. Replacing wheel, tyre and any shock absorber damage would be expensive but certainty of the level of damege must be validated first.
Your insurer could put you in touch with their loss assesors, otherwise speak to a trusted tyre / wheel specialist.
I would feel the run on Sunday should be ok but an expert is unlikely to take a risk without a detailed examination. Imagine hitting a pothole at the same point?
Let me know if you get stuck for advice. Good luck! Keith.

Cheers Paul , i will report it .. it had just left its hole and was sitting out right beside it , i went to overtake the car in front and i seen it at the last minute , just been back out and the car seems ok but you never know what its done to the tyres / suspension etc .

Cheers Keith .. it was on the A695 Corbridge 1/2 a mile from my house , the roads through Corbridge are way over due repairs , this is the second cats eye housing ( which is heavy steel ) ive seen come out on the same road.
I will take your advice and get the tyres taken off tomorrow and the wheels inspected , the other shock top mount is not lifting as that one has so ill take the car in to TFs place in the morning to see what he thinks.
As far as any claim goes i can already see the local council shrugging their shoulders and dismissing it, they probably have a stock answer all ready to fire , but im going to report it anyway .
If i disappear off the edge of a cliff on Sunday at least you will know why

I claimed successfully after a cycling accident (hit a pothole on a flooded section of the road between Bywell and Ovingham). Northumberland CC made an ex-gratia payment without admitting liability when I wrote telling them I was taking the matter to court.

The wheels are incredibly strong. However, you need to be back in the same position you were prior to the impact.

Lots of photos will assist your claim. The CC legal team see these claims as bread and butter. The police report number will help as Paul correctly advises.

See you on Sunday. Keith.

Hi Keith, I wouldn't have thought the alloy would have been damaged and then bent back to its original shape? I would have thought if it got bent enough to cause a crack it would still be bent? Doubt the rubber top mount has been damaged, it's probably just wear and tear.
There's an old guy driving round in a car exactly the same as yours, saw him in Kingston park, thought it was you and was waving and trying to get your attention! He must have though who's this idiot!!

Ian

Ouch Keith that looks a nasty thing to run over. I hope you get them to cough up for repairs.

Keith,

Bad luck mate, I would certainly pursue the council as the lads have suggested. If you are not sute about the ride out on Sunday you can ride along with me if you get to Corbridge. :thumb:

Cheers chaps , had the wheel checked out at my trusty local Kwikfit and they are ok , still need to speak to tf about the top mount as he wasn't there this morning , ive ben told by the police to take the matter up with the council which i will.
so i will able to play out tomorrow :thumb:

Had a similar experience (with much worse damage) a while back. Call your highways dept asap and ask for a claim form. Lancs County forked out £1500 without quibble after seeing photos and invoices. I feel your pain.

Thanks Richard , i think my car is ok , just have to look at the suspension, have reported the incident

How is the cat?

I didn't realise you had ran over a cats eye, I thought it was just one of the cobbles the roads up there are made of.

I hit a pothole a few years back, damaged my wheel, put a claim to the council who rejected it ... No surprise there.
They sent many solicitors letters saying the council wasn't at fault, I took them to the small claims court (this was around 1 year later after all of the solicitors letters I received), I won and was awarded all costs and the cost of a new wheel, I also was awarded £300 for the cost of my time for all corespondence during the 12 monts of wasting my time, the solicitor for Edinburgh council who I spoke to privately after the event mentioned that they never win these cases when they go to court, it's expected that people give up long before the court case, he also told me that what I received was a drop in the ocean to what their costs were....
