Wheel refurbishment costs?

Hi,
I have the split rim sport classic 2 wheels on my 02 996. The laquer has gone on the outer rims but the barrels are fine.

Is there anything specialist about splitting and rebuilding these? I am being quoted £100 per wheel to split and rebuild, then the costs to refurb the outers on top. I have it in my head its just remove the bolts, repair and rebolt - recognising bolts could be tight and that I need the right tool - am i way off?

All four need doing but the photo attached is of the worst one

The wheels were immaculate 3 years ago when I bought the car so I suspect they have been refurbed just before I got it and so will have been split relatively recently?

Thanks for any advice

Chris

Have the same problem with mine so be interested in any replies. Was thinking of doing it myself as my damage is quite superficial but depends on cost of professional repairs.

I would give Chris at Exel wheels a call great service on my rims and a loaner set of wheels can be provided if you need to stay on the road

When I recently had my 993 18" turbo twists done at Lepsons, it was around £400 I think. Albeit 1 piece wheels.

I agree.. Chris at Exel would be my go to as he does an excellent job..With the split rims its very easy to damage the wheel if you don't know what you're doing or aren't familiar with the potential problems.. very easy to snap bolts(which are not available anymore) and strip threads.
I would suggest at least giving Chris a call to discuss

So those are 2 piece wheels, the face and the barrel. Depends on how perfect you want but I believe you could strip and recut those without breaking the wheels.

Its fairly easy to take the faces out but if you get a stuck bolt its a pain as they are very hard and ***** to drill out.

Also just to let you know the wheel you have posted in the pic is a BBS Sport Design not the BBS Sport Classic 2

I've had quotes of circa £800 to do my sports classic 2's in the last few years. They still need doing as a result!

Now that I've finally sorted all the suspension out they may well get a refurb this year, my logic was that a nice set of wheels was pointless when there was more fundamental things to spend the money on.

I got mine done last year at The Wheel Specialist in Leeds for £580. I went for powder coated chrome for the outer parts as I am not great at keeping the car clean. I think that a polished lip would have been even more.

A decent set of new wheels would be 4 or 5 times more than that, so I thought it was a decent investment.

One thing to point out is that the price increased from the initial quote due to a load of the bolts snapping - which is to be expected for splits. I think they turned out quite nice!

Chris will not let you down. Superb service from a very knowledgable man, has just refurbished 5 996 turbo wheels for me. Excellent standard of finish.

Having been through this ...... Titanium is a b*tch to drill out when you snap off a stud - be careful, you have been warned!

As for new bolts should you need them I picked up some from i believe Jasmine Porschalink? it was a few years ago now .....however - Addiction Motorsport appear to have them in stock...

Did mine 4 years ago and they are already needing yet another refurb, the mating faces of the split rims allows the corrosion to get in under any lacquer or powder coating and they go again it would seem. :wall:

if they were near perfect 3 years ago when you purchased, then I would suggest they have not been apart but had a cheap on car refurb - so just painted not stripped and powder coated - doesn't really matter what you pay the main point is to ensure the tyres are being removed and wheels blasted before re finishing - anyone offering the service in a few hours is not going to do it right.

wheel

If you do this yourself make sure you tighten the outer bolts;
A..to the correct torque setting
B.. in the correct order to avoid warping the wheel.
