Smell of petrol, 2006 Carrera 2S

With petrol tank nearly full and down to half full during some spirited driving there was no smell of petrol, ie entirely normal. Then just below half full during spirted driving only there was a smell of petrol from inside then car, outside smell appeared strongest around front offside wheel. After this during normal driving there was no smell at all inside or outside when we stopped.

Petrol cap was tight, it is the original and o ring does looked a bit perished, so I will replace the cap, but do not think this is the cause as smell only started with lees fuel in the tank.

Any suggestions of obvious places to start looking much appreciated.
