Independant Porsche specialists issues

When we buy a 996 Porsche we ideally want to see a Porsche official maintenance history ideally or if not at least a Porsche Indy specialist one. The same is for our maintenance of our cars, I do worry that some Indy Porsche garages start off offering great service with the business owners being knowledgable, enthusiastic and in some cases the chief mechanic but once they get busy you are no longer served by the "enthusiasm, skill and personal knowledge" but by the "low knowledge/cheap labour" they bring in to handle the workload, I have suffered many examples of this.

Wondering if others are seeing the same.

what would be your examples ?

I think it really depends on the indie, not sure the generalisation is fair but I get your point in some ways. My first/old, indie was certainly falling into your category, but the one I am using now is very much acting like Porsche dealership on many front (minus the labour rate). They don't compromise to the point where sometimes I think it's overdoing like a dealership would but better that then the opposite for sure.

Choose a better Indy! Not all independents are the same. Personally I’d be more worried buying an older Porsche if it had only been seen by an opc. In my experience opc doesn’t equal quality far from it, I’d always choose a top Indy once you take car out of warranty. Do you research and hunt out the specialist for your model not just the most convenient would be my recommendation

I am absolutely certain that a generalisation is unfair to some excellent indies, and I do get that, I wrote "I do worry that Indi Porsche garages" which should have read "I do worry that some Indy Porsche garages"

then why should anyone else provide their experiences to be able to provide a comparison if you are unwilling to do the same

help us understand what your concerns are so that we can respond in kind, the forum is about factual collaboration, you dont have to name names but be clear with your messaging

This confuses me.

I have, over time, gained the feeling that with a number of indys the initial experience was excellent and then following that the experience has deteriorated drastically as the Indy became more busy and the work was handed down to juniors. I am wondering if this is something others are experiencing so I feel my messaging is clear.

I am rather surprised that you feel the need to critisise.

It would be useful for you to elaborate on your insights so that we can understand this potential issue and maybe draw any parallels or observations from the industry that we might not have picked up on

Quite simply that we pay a premium which is fine for experienced service but all too often the work is done by juniors which is not fine.

One example:

Alloy pedals fitted obviously by a person who didn't understand the basics as they all fell off after a week. No Loctite used, no spring washers used, my local garage would have done better, this is just one example.

At an OPC several years ago I was charged nosebleed money to replace the brakes on my then three year old 981.

I went to pick it up and found a teenager on the job, unsupervised.

Next time it was due for a brake fluid change, 3 out of 8 nipples broke. All 8 had been massively overtightened.

It's not just the aftermarket that can put juniors on your car. The main dealers can too.

Why I maintain my cars myself, that way I know it’s done properly and I’ve only myself to answer too
