Faulty Dansk Sports silencers - Cut up

I bought a pair of Dansk Sports silencers second hand last year, one of which was reputed to be faulty in some way. Other than looking unusually "swollen" and deformed they seems OK.

I did try them on the car after having to take off the old PSE silencers because of rusty seams.

One of the Dansk ones definitely "puffed" and the car didn't perform as well as before fitting.

Anyway, I took them off again and went with some Top Gear Mild Sports as a fit and forget solution.

Today, interested to find out what the "Fault" with the Dansk silencer was, I cut it open. Below are some pics for anyone interested.....

Outer case cut open, and to my surprise there is an inner case that also appears to be gas tight. A double skin, but it appears that gasses have got in between the two skins and forced them apart, constricting the inner chamber.

Getting the stainless apart was a really difficult task. It is thick grade material.

Shows you the internal design. Not particularly high flow/ It appears the internal baffle plate dividing the two chambers has collapsed being crushed by the inner skin bring force together. Either way, very difficult to salvage.

Am probably going to throw it unless anyone on here wants it sent to them at cost?

Hope its of interest, cheers.

PS - Welded up the old Porsche Sports Exhaust silencers (Actuators stuck open) and they are in Parts for Sale if anyone interested....

Hi James

That's really interesting - I had one 'blow" on me a few years back. Never bothered cutting it open but interesting to see what the cause was as various people said I must have reversed into something  Just curious - was yours the N/S or O/S?

Following with dis-interest.

My Top Gear Mild Sport Boxes are still going strong and already outlasted the inferior DANSK ones that dropped to bits after 2 years.

Now coming up to my 4 year Anniversary with the Top Gear. There's a reason they named them that.

No affiliation obviously

Just had a quick check for reference. I've done 35k miles with the Top Gear boxes. Car lives outside in damp and cold Lancashire and used daily, however salty the roads are.

I'm trying my best to be able to take advantage of the life-time guarantee in my ownership but as yet not succeeded. :)

Have these caved in due to backpressure on over run or something else. :dont know:

Funnily enough when I was in the motor trade, I used to deal with Jopex/JP Group who manufacture Dansk exhausts and we sold their exhausts as the bottom of the range, almost disposable units. When I mentioned this to a few Porsche owners/specialists I was assured that these back boxes were top quality and no one had ever had a problem with them. Ever. Then when mine fell to bits after being on the car for 9 months and less than 3000 miles all of a sudden it seemed everyone knew they were crap
I actually put the supposedly knackered PSE back on and it's been there almost 6 years. When it does finally give up the ghost though I'll be fitting the Top Gears. Wish I'd have known about them before I'd bought the Dansk...

I have some designtek valvetronic back boxes that were fitted almost exactly 3 years ago and probably less than 5000 miles. At least one of them is rattling and sounds awful.

Need to look into replacement switchable back boxes.

I cant remember ever reading a positive review about Dansk, I am surprised their still in business. :nooo:

+1

My Dansk boxes fell apart after a year too, the flexi gave up the ghost on one side.
The top gear ones are still going strong, much lighter and much better quality engineering.

If anyone wants a couple of Dansk sport exhausts to do something with £40 will get them out of my garage!

I bought Dansk because they were the recommendation of many a Porsche bod, on here included. Then I fitted them and about a year afterwards Alex had his flexi's go for a swannie and I thought oh well, dodgy batch maybe? Then more and more posts saying the same thing appeared.

Thankfully mine haven't gone through yet but the car has been pretty seldom used, so it's hardly a ringing endorsement. They still look like they've been in the sea compared to the rest of the underside of my car, which has very little patina otherwise.

When they go I'll replace them with something proven - thankfully Alex has done the work for me there, too.
