Hi Infra

Its dryish (as dry as anything in this weather) and more crystalline than anything. There is no evidence of any mayonnaise in any of the oil filler tubes, and the coolant looked perfect. I almost wanted to keep it.

Thanks

Berni

The picture isn't great but it could be just corrosion if it's not been run regularly

Hi Guys

Whipped a head off today. All went as expected, nothing bad happened, and we were pleased to see that the cams looked as wear free as one could have hoped for. The IMS bearing is marked up as original ie 6204 DU17 although the IMS cover has the revised seal with the three ribs, so must have been off at some stage. (Edit: do the facelift cars IMS covers come with the three rib gaskets? I thought not). The bearing itself feels perfect.

From looking at the conditions of the cams I am getting more hopeful that the crank is going to be good also, and not damaged from any bore score material.

At 111k miles I was expecting to see heavily degraded chain ramps, but it seems not.

Photos of the cams, gunk build up on the pistons (soft gunk) and bore score etc below. We are hoping that the pistons can be refurbished rather than junked.

All the best

Berni

I think the IMS seal that came out of mine the first time was 3 rib?

A successful repair to the pistons will depend how scored they are, the marks on the bores look a little deep (could be just the light) so may have gone through the coating on the piston skirt?

Looking at your IMS post,it almost looks wider than standard but that could just be the camera angle?

Hi

Got the other head off and half the case split today. No bore score visible on 1-3 as far as we can tell so far. Here are pictures of the badly scored pistons. Hopefully the other side will be fine.

Nothing untoward in the sump, and again the cams, guides and ramps looked very good.

Will lift the crank assembly out tomorrow hopefully. It just lifts out I think? Seemed pretty stuck when I gave it a tug today.

There are two bolts holding the crank carrier to the crankcase 1-3 and one bolt for 4-6, maybe you missed one or if not it is a very heavy lump of metal and can take some lifting. I fit 4 head bolts back into the crank carrier and fit a chain to those to lift it out, best done with en engine crane but it is doable by lifting.

Good progress Berni. This makes for perfect after work evening reading 😁

Hello again

So we finished off the engine strip yesterday, getting the crank assembly out took a little while, partly because it was happy where it was, and secondly we did not realise the crankshaft pulley was fouling the case half. I am sure I have seen people lifting it out with the pulley on but no way.

The suggestion to use the engine hoist to lift it out was an excellent one, and probably saved at least one life.

The crank (my biggest personal worry) looks fine to our eyes. Some strange wear on two of the big end journals.

At least 3 pistons are toast.

Photos below and in the following posts!

We have been in touch with Hartech and are waiting to hear back. The minimum will be 6 liners and (3?) pistons, even though there is no scoring at all on 1,3,5. (Photos of the good bores show both sides of the bores and pistons, so 6 in total for that side).

Thanks again

Berni

Actually I forgot to mention that and I did exactly the same last week when I trial fitted my crank carrier, I'd fitted the pulley to turn the engine and when I tried to lift it back out it fouled on the locking hole so I had to remove the pulley again to lift the carrier out.

Hi my brother has been cleaning as much as possible, we hope to get a shed build for the engine assembly. Waiting for the weather to get better.

Hartech special larger bearing machined into earlier sprocket, very nice.

Hello!

True enough!

We are starting that process now. To that end does anyone have a copy of the workshop manual with all the various torque settings please? There is a copy on workshop manuals.com but its online only and very difficult to use what with the pop ups all over the place etc.

Also what is the consensus for cleaning all the oilways? We thought force brake cleaner though with canned air. I'm hoping there is an easier way.

Thanks again

Berni
