cayenne powered rear hatch-closing button wont work

My recently purchased 2013 cayenne has developed a few niggles on the rear hatch.

1. Rear wiper has a mind of its own wont switch off, and comes on randomly to be fair the seller mention it had an issue.

2. At the weekend the closing button stopped working still opening and locking ok from remote and drivers door.

None of these problems seem uncommon going by the rennlist threads I had a look through at the weekend unfortunately none of them gave the solution.

I believe these functions run of a module that is in the side of the rear compartment are these known to fail ? wiring issue maybe ? faulty switch ? could be 2 seperate issues.

so if anyone has a starter for ten or a wiring diagram would help to check the wires between the tailgate and module. (hopefully Ian Demort will be along with some wisdom :thumb: )

Simples !!

1/ Wiper motor is a VAG part that some clever sod in design thought it would be clever to have the rear washer pipe / jet running through and part of this unit .. like electricity and water are ever going to mix sigh .

The internal seals blow when the jet gets blocked .. frozen or dirt .. water in the wiper motor then causes anything from inop to working when it feels like it .

New rear wiper motor req .

2/ Its possible water from the wiper motor has got inside the tail gate panel and contaminated either the control unit ( as per picture ) or the switch itself .

Start by removing the tailgate panel and a visual inspection of wiring etc .

The rams that open the tailgate have potentiometers in them to tell the CU the position .. these can fail .. tester and fault code read out as there will be a fault code if its this.

With a tester you could probably look to see if the car is seeing the switch being pressed .. it would be under actual values .. if not then control unit or switch at fault .

I've never yet replaced a switch though .. i feel a piwis after a visual look would be best here .. any garage should be able to diagnose this .. its not a complicated system .

Just to point out the 2008 model WAS a complicated system .. 1 year only they used a mechanical VAG system .. very expensive , hydraulic and crap .

Ok a picture below .. i'm versatile ill have you know .. Cayenne minus its roof .. they can leak you know ..

Bit of a tip for you .. crawl under the car o/s/r and n/s/r .. just before the tailpipe all the way up on the floor pan ..

X2 drain tubes , one each side .. with side cutters cut the tip off to leave a 1 cm hole .. you can thank me later ;)

Ian

yet again thank you for your input, I suspect your on the money with water being the culprit as I thought I seen water dripping out from the closing button and I had been back and forth to Edinburgh using the washer regularly the day before, there is water coming out of it however thats not to say its not leaking inside the tailgate, once I get a chance to strip it out I will report back :thumb:

cheers

Gary

just to mention hope its not an omen mine is white with a pan roof :D

Lol .. trust me water leaks and colour .. it doesn't matter ... black one was the roof frame leaking ... that was far more expensive than yours .

Get those drain bungs cut to give a bigger opening .. the side image of the white cayenne shows a dead Bose amp with water on the rear end control unit .. i saved that part and all down to blocked drain grommets ... bose amp was £1K from memory .

It does sound like you may have had water get into the switch .. get it stripped out and have a look .. sometimes you can dry out things like switches and they work again .

Wiper motor again sounds to be the cause of this .. it will need replacing 100 % from your description .

So got round to swapping out the wiper motor today which is pretty straightforward as its only held on with three nuts some pics below on how all the trim comes off. Only problem I had was the bloody wiper arm was seized solid on the spindle tried spraying it up and tapping the motor out but no joy ended up cutting the spindle and ordering a new wiper arm.

I also stripped the closing switch which showed signs of corrosion on some of the pins so cleaned these up and its working fine :thumb:

Trim removal order I followed

Top piece along the window is held on with three clips but is also hooked over the frame with small clips on the top edge.

The 2 side trims and rear cover came off as one piece they are clipped together at the bottom of the side trims which need to be slid upwards if you want to seperate them.

Before you start pulling the back panel of there are 5 screws that need removed

2 in the handle on the left hand side
1 behind the hatch closing button which needs removed to gain access to the screw
2 underneath the warning triangle flap on the velcro straps

I know what you mean with wiper arms .. always a pain to remove but at work i have a tool that helps .. after a bit of searching i found a pretty cheap one that's useful to have even if you never really need to use it ..

Nice going with the job and glad it was just a simple clean of the switch .. i always find jobs like this satisfying .
