997.2 owner here so don't shoot me down but I saw this car on the bay and wanted to get people's thoughts:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/194067629237?hash=item2d2f5504b5:g:ctoAAOSwr0RghvJl

I know nothing about 996s other than the well known borescore and IMS issues. Does anyone know this car? It's a bit marmite, granted, but looks clean. Okay so no engine rebuild done but it's a 17 grand car so not ecomomical (although my belief is that rebuilt 996s will go mental over the next 2-3 years so a rebuild may be worthwhile).

So what does one look for when delving into the purchase of a 996?

I'd double check that the long list of advisories listed on the 2019 MOT were actually done before it got a completely clean bill of health in 2020.

£17k for a 130k mile privately listed car on e-bay says a lot about how the market has changed.

5 years ago £17k would have been the screen price for a 70k mile 996 at a Porsche specialist.

...nice colour combination...

But the market has shifted...£17 k for 130,000 miles highlights this...

...for example I paid £16k for an immaculate 2003 69k miler 3 years ago!

Having said that my engine shat itself leading to a £14k bill

Sorry don't know the car but looks lovely in the pics, £17k for a tip with 130,000m. It seems the only way is up price wise.

Just over 6 years ago my very good condition Lapis C2 996 manual, 80,000m was £11k, probably worth more than that now with another £40,000m

Photos taken in a place that will flatter it IMO. Looks a decent car but need more info on bodywork and maintenance. 997 style rear lights, aero front and side skirts as well.

I like the way the asking prices are going at the moment.

That :thumb:

Lovely colour combo as mentioned.
Damn i can't believe how prices have risen recently but i guess it doesn't
mean he will get the asking price.
Maybe i shouldn't have cut up a manual factory aero with 66k miles the way values are going

The latest in a long line of people mis-placing the S from 'Tiptronic S'.

At least he didn't stick one on the engine cover.

Without having the car inspected by someone you trust to do a decent Pre Purchase Inspection PPI, it's difficult to know if a car is worth the asking price.

In my view, any 996 with 130K miles is potentially either looking likely for a rebuild or should have had one. But equally, there are other members on here that will point out many cars have done significantly more miles than.that with no issues.

If you're only likely to do a 1000 miles a year tootling to car shows and polishing it, then I'm sure it'll be fine. If you fancy blasting it about on a Sunday morning, or tackling a track day. Hmmmm, maybe not?

Prices will even up in a month when more privately owned cars come on the market for the summer. Traders always manage to bump up prices between Jan and March. Late aug/Sept seems a cheaper time to buy

Even at current prices £16k for a 130k miles tiptronic seems toppy. It does look fantastic (ignoring the close up of the curbed wheel) but it would need to be top condition with all the jobs like exhaust, manifold bolts, AOS, brake lines, recent suspension etc done for that.
