Advice on selling 993 Cat D

Hi guys. As a new member I do not want to break any forum rules by accident so I will be a little vague here. I plan to advertise my car on here anyway but would like to hear your thoughts on my sales strategy.

The car in question is a Nov 1996 Arena Red C2s with 77000 miles on the clock.
I have owned the car for 16 years. The previous owner' Turbo tributed'
it and did such a great job, that at Porsche shows, no one could tell that it wasn't the real deal. All parts were TechArt and Gemballa
It is in great mechanical condition and has never seen a winter and hardly a wet day in the last sixteen years.

So the issue is where to price because of the Cat D. I am thinking of 40% less than a non Cat D.
The cat D story is probably the best that you could expect to hear. And I have all the documentation to verify it.
It suffered light front passenger side damage around the front wing and wheel arch.

The accident was in the first 12 months of new, and I am told by many experts that at the time, Porsche Insurance had a policy where you could get a new for damaged replacement if the accident occured in the first 12 months. The paperwork appears to back this up. Also the owner of the repair company that bought the car from the insurer, thought the car was so good that he kept it for two years himself. I know this box A ,it is on the logbook and B that I spoke to him just two weeks ago when he was kind enough to send me a copy of a picture of the car, that still hangs in the reception of his business! Great to see in original C2s guise.

In the time that I have had it, it has been fantastic, and no one has ever know it was cat d. The first time I had it serviced in2004 by Specialist Cars of Malton, I asked them if they had noticed that it was a Cat D , and they were really surprised and Mike stated that it was one of the tightest cars that he had ever driven. And Mike races GT cars.

So, does a good story plus all the paperwork detailing the damage and repair help me much. I am still pricing i tat what I consider low for a quick sale.
I am not sure if I am allowed to say how much because I am unsure of forum rules but I will be advertising it on here (takes 24hrs) anyway.

I think (obviously) that it is a real bargain and that I am giving it away.
I am selling because I am buying a house in France and also because the last 5 years I have had a serious immune system illness and as anyone can see from the MOT certificates, it has only done a few hundred miles a year.

I am wanting to sell it to an enthusiast who gets a really good C2s at an otherwise unaffordable price.

So what do you think? Will the back story help me to sell it?

Buyers of 993 are fickle most crave perfection unmolested original spec cars that haven't been bent.

Your car therefore will be a turn off for (a) making it to look something it's not and (b) its a Cat D.

I can't understand why the insurers wrote the car off if the damage was 'minor' (ie not Cat C) and the car was only 12 months old. The repair cost must have been siginificant and likely chassis related (despite being Cat D) unless as you say Porsche 'Insurance' offered it.

Was the guy who repaired it a Porsche repairer or as I suspect he bought it through auction and tackled it himself? If the provenance is there along with the rebuild pics and parts etc that goes some way to giving a buyer confidence. Any feedback from SCoM will carry little weight on here!

Your 'assessment' of 40% less than a straight car is where I'd pitch it to find a buyer who wants a Cat D AND a modified 993S. They could go hand in hand as the buyer will likely care little for what the 993 Illuminati members will think. :grin:

I'd consider it for the right price.

Bottom line, if it's priced right, it'll sell.

It'll be a more economical entry into a 993 for someone who will drive it and not keep it as an investment.
 
Bottom line is that you assessment of c40% less than a none cat car is about right.....that would also need to be based on a private sale but 'nice mileage" 77k example .....at a guess I would say a £60k - £65k car less 40% gives you £35k to £40k..........but as Zingari mentions if its none stock 'turbo rep" that may actually devalue (not sure why you would make a turbo rep out of a 2S as there is no need IMHO) .........you will also likely need to factor in an inspection as a car doing little mileage in the past 5 is zero indicator of mechanical condition of a 20 year old car....ie being a cat car I would have a reputable up to date inspection ready to go.....

Put some pics up of the car now to show off its condition and pics of the original damage if you now have them........again a right off within 12 months of new is always worrying given what the likely rebuild cost must have been !

Ps I would keep quite about SCOM giving the car a thumbs up as that is more likely to put punters off based on some of the frankensteins they have sold :grin:

All very valid views. I put it up on Piston Heads at 35k and it was sold within 30mins! So I am thinking that I could have got more. I didn't even get to put it up for sale here or on Autotrader. I am a man of my word and made the deal even though I have had people offering me more....
Bird in the hand, and I wanted a quick sale. So at least I have the Bank Holliday free :D

Very nice looking car. Someone is very happy out there today. Especially at that price. I doubt you had any haggling, and virtually bit your hand off before someone else snagged it. Glad you are happy with result too.
 
I suspect the car will be off overseas at that price. If a chap called Zak bought it he'll have a container waiting to go :grin:
