I'd go to a specialist. For example, Alpinair in West London charge £60 (check you have correct old gas type if using Kwikfit!).
It was quite interesting to watch them do a vacuum test first. If the vacuum holds, then add gas. (EDIT: or was it pressure test. Either way...) It's an automated machine, but you do one, wait a bit then do the next. Not much point pumping in gas if no vacuum. I assume that's how KwikFit avoid charging as they need not use gas if they know it leaks.
Fault finding is a pain. As alluded to above, the Evap is basically the bit that Porsche put on the factory floor then build a car around!
