The guide tubes for these were modified in 2006/7 , no announcement from Porsche .. they just appeared .
The new type fitted to later 997 is a fully braced system , the earlier type on all 996 and some early 997 was a non braced system which can spread apart .
Original tubes are gold with the modified ones being silver .. remove the rear panel and you can see them .. if gold then they are original .
In the case of the original tubes .. i have never been able to replace just the cables .. they dont fit and i wouldn't do that regardless due to possible tube spreading .
997 and i have once replaced cables on their own once only ..
In either case with a roof refurb .. get cables AND guide tubes replaced ... you only want to do this job once so the cost is worth it .
I have replaced many early types .. i have done about 3 of the new type .. all had been greased with axle grease .. a big No No .
