A friend of mine was talking to a wheel clamper in London who told him that they were no longer allowed to tow away Ferrari's, Lamborghinis and Astons because when they lift them it bends the chassie and they have had to pay out thousands in damages!

Just wondering if anyone else had heard anything similar or had any problems after being towed.

My dad and I parked (along with about 200 other people) on the side of the road (grass verge) about 10 years ago at Thruxton for the touring cars. Everyone was doing it, and the police or RAC or whoever were making a complete *****-up of getting people into the car park and the traffic was que'd back about 3 miles!..

Came back after a good day of racing, and the only cars left were a couple of ferraris and a maserati.. Everyone else had been towed; charged about £150 to release, but my dad being the stubborn bastard he is, refused to pay! He was driving a pool car from work at the time and his new company car was arriving the next day! Told the company they could keep the car, and got my mum to come and collect us.

He got a call about 2 days later to come and get his car because it was in their way and they couldnt do anything with the damn thing!.. According to the guy, they were operating on behalf of the police, and had been told not to take any exotic or classic cars because they wouldnt be covered for repairs if the car got damaged.

On a similar line, a mate got his merc CL towed in london just before xmas, and they dinged the rear wing and bumper lifting it onto their flatbed; he's still trying to get the money back for the repair!

On a slightly different note I was told that 911's with 18" wheels can't be clamped because there is too little space between the wheel and bodywork - I haven't tested the theory, but does anyone know for sure?

Well, if thats true, it sounds like a good way of justifying to the lady wife the need for lowering the suspension! Now, where did I put Gert's number? . . .

There is no way they could get a clamp on my RS, you cant even get a peice of paper between the arch and the tyre :)

Hello, all I have got the same type wheel clamp that the police use etc, when I get my 930 hopefully in the next two weeks. If the PPI report comes back good, number FIVE this will be. Will let you all know, if the clamp fits .

My 993 Turbo (with 18" wheels) was clamped in Central London a few months back. £125 release fee
