You pop into your garage and notice this under your car...

Really frustrating - have been plagued with coolant leaks on this car, am now assuming that we are still yet to find the real issue.

Very annoying when you know the money you had for a mjor service and a geo will be used trying to cure this leak :x

not just air con drain?

Wish it was. Further back then that, and is most definitely coolant.

Tastes bitter

As it is n ot from the front end, at least you can breathe a sigh of relief it is not the rads and condensors! That is an expensive fix - usually if one rad is leaking it is often better just to change them all and be done with it - and that drives the cost upwards quite a bit.

Can't help you with this one. It may be simple pipework and hose leaks.

If you're like me and paranoid about such things, you will crane your head under the car very often when it has been to left to stand for a few days to check that all is dry underneath. Noticing such a large patch as your photo, you will need to have it sorted ASAP at an indy. Only standing under it on a ramp will give yout he view and access that is needed to even begin the diagnosis.

Time to break open the piggy bank for major service - that's why I always advocate that in addition to routine maintenance and servicing, ownership of these (ageing) supercars needs an additional slush fund of £2k for such situations.

I had a small patch of oil near the rear wheel a month after the MOT which it flew through with no advisories. Turned out to be a leak had developed in one shock absorber - had to repalce both rear shocks and a full geo that required dipping into the slush fund. That's the nature of these cars. Things can and do go wrong.

Let us know how you get on.

Totally agree re Slush fund, is what it is. Have the money there for the work, just frustrating :)

At the same time however, when the works done I can have some piece of mind. Got access to ramps, barometer and pressure test kit for expansion tank. Will take a look myself, then assuming the fix will be out of reach I'll take it to an Indy

Would feel silly if it was a hose within easy reach

You are a braver man than me! I just take mine straight to my indy to sort out. You might like to consider taking off the front PU and examining the condition of rads and condensors if you are not sure what state they are in.

From the location, it appears to be just a simple fix such as a loose hose or a clip that has become loose. All the piepework and the hoses run along that area covered up by a floor tray when I last looked at mine on a ramp - I always have a look at my car oin the ramp when it goes in for anything and ask the indy to walk me through the whole car standing together underneath.

Fingers crossed for you.

The rads aren't to bad to be honest - and I wish it was those! Have had the front PU off recently - although costly, the rads aren't overly difficult to replace as a DIY.

May not look obvious, but the coolant is actually leaking down the main block, engine side of the bell housing.

My concern it is that this may be one of the hoses the crosses the top of the block - which may mean engine out.

Anythign but that I could live with! If it does come out however, I'll look into a new Clutch, and have the inserts welded in the process to future proof the engine. All things I planned to do - but in 12-18 months :)

Still - I can't help but love her!

Well - bit of an update.

Finally got the car up on ramps and had a look best I could with a boroscope.

Unfortunatly, due to all the twists and turns - all I managed to ascertain was that the leak is coming from the nearside of the block, fairly central - seems to be running down the back of the block, on the edge of the bell housing.

There is potential that it could still be the boded insert on the pipe leading off the water pump, but having had this repaired, and checking a couple of weeks back, it didn't seem to be this.

Looks like its going to be going into the local indy!

So... car up on ramps again this eve, and took the car back down and alternator out again.

This time... a little more success... I think.

Managed to get the boroscope into a few gaps and am pretty sure I found where the leak was coming from. Clearly coolant leaking from the end of a hose, even when not under pressure,

Trying to establish exactly what the hose is, and where it goes to, but I have a strong suspicion, which, if I am right - is the hose coming off the oil filter bracket? If it's not that, it is one very close - seems to sit behind the chain tensioner.

Anyone got any ideas? Still not convinced I'll be able to do anything with it myself! But glad I've got an idea.

Need to pressure the system ideally - then I will know for sure!

p.s. not my engine - another stolen image

It's l;ike that film where the ladis get told "you should have bought a beaver". Change the wording and it could be "you should just take it to an indy and have it sorted."

There isn't much room in these cars to work on them in your drive on ramps. They really need to be hoisted up to the roof and stand under to get a good look!

Good luck.

It will be going to Ken at 9e in Jan for the work... But, I'd be kicking myself if it had been an easy fix.

I do this to learn / fully understand my car.. If I had the space and kit iI would drop the engine myself. Life's about learning!

I know exactly where my limits are, and won't stretch them beyond it on a car like this.

Great to hear - Ken knows these cars well. He'll be able to sort it quickly for you. Yes, it is a tricky one - something small that you could have fixed yourself rather thna pay £70 + VAT.

You are more adventurous than me for sure. I juts fill the windscreen washer and add oil when it needs it. Everything else - straight to the indy, he hoists it up, we stand under it, identify what it needs, get a price and then book it in.

I have pictures of enthusiasts crawling under cars on cold winter days and nights, 10 minutes outside, 1 hour inside thawing their fingers, then back out for 10 minutes. Not for me. You are indeed brave!

If I'm looking at the right hose in your pic, it's a coolant hose going to or from the oil/"water" heat exchanger, not the oil filter.

Cheers mate, I did mean that, just tripped over words :frustrated:

I wasn't trying to pick holes in your choice of words, but to establish which hose junction might be leaking. :D I wondered whether you thought that you might have an oil leak rather than a coolant leak.

Assuming that it can't be fixed by just tightening the hose clip and that it is just a single strand of hose (no Y-joints), it might be a fairly manageable one to replace completely without dropping the engine IF the other end of it is also accessible? :dont know:

Do you have access to the PET parts list for your car to try to follow the runs of the coolant hoses and establish their part numbers? If not, you might find it useful to invest roughly £6 to £8 in the PET CD ROM available through OPCs. You might find that you have to tell your OPC that it is available. I did. :D The order number for mine (2010 version) was 000 043 400 05. It covers all Porsche series production cars up to that date.
