Windscreen Problems

Further to my previous thread regarding having to have a new windscreen after a stone crack and the resultant poor fitting and leaking, I've just got the car back from my nearest Indy.

The car originally had a Sigla screen, which with the rubber covered the bodywork fine. When the fitter came to instal the first replacement he commented that the new Pilkington screen was very slightly smaller, so that with the rubber in place it left some of the old paintwork exposed (plus it keeps trying to curl under the the front chanel). No matter what he tried it would not 'cover' properly. Unfortunately I had a leak so he had to come out again and fitted yet another Pilkington screen which again was slightly smaller than the original Sigla one. I told the windscreen co I was not happy and that I was taking to an independent garage for their comments.

The garage whilst servicing the car had the windscreen main depot fitter out and he agreed that it's still not sealed properly (and I'm still getting water in!) which they will address, plus look into why it's not fitting like the original. Whilst in the garage they had another customer book his car in with a similar windscreen fitting problem - he'd had the roof etc resprayed and a new front screen supplied by Porsche, which again is a Pilkingto screen.

Has anybody else had problems with a new windscreen? What make of screen have you got fitted? The garage think there is a larger screen rubber but were not able to locate it.

Hopefully someone here will have come across this problem. Many thanks.

Only have a windscreen replaced if the car's an MOT failure.

Sorry to hear your woes, I've been there, done that, got the t-shirt etc.

My car was off the road for THREE months having a screen fitted and I use my car every day.

My Mercedes Hire car was £100 per day, payable by my Insurance company. That's nearly £10,000 for the time it was off the road.(We wonder why our premiums go up)

Total incompetance from the clowns at Auto Windscreens who my insurers insisted I used.
I found out later you can legally insist on using your own fitter, and I would recommend a body shop or Classic Car windscreen fitter.

Three screens came from OPC and none fitted. Can't remember what they were, I had given up the will to live after two weeks.

The one in there now is a Pilkington R-101585 if that's any help.

Make sure you've got Teflon tape under the rubber. It will squeak if you haven't.

Must go, blood pressure's going up just remembering the nightmare.

Hi Ian (and thanks for the links, Mick).

I have a fairly good idea of what the problem could be, but without all the details, it would be silly to assume. Also, as much as there can be size differences between screens, if there are they are negligible. For them to be the reason the installer is blaming, there would need to be differences of +3mm.

Could you post up any images?

Kimbo: this year I have removed and refitted half a dozen creaking 993 screens. Five of them had the Teflon tape under the seals. All six are back out there now with the same screens. No tape. No creaking.

Very interesting article and I may contact them on Monday (assuming they're back before the New Year).

Unfortunately I live down in the far South West of Cornwall, so difficult to meet with anyone who know's 993's. it just seems odd that the new Pilkington screen is smaller than the original Sigla one.

The phone is always on for emails as well as calls, and advice is free.

How far are you from Launceston?

Hi Glassman, what images would you like? I'm not very good with sending them but I did originally email pictures of the original screen to Auto Glass so they could see what needed replacing.

Images of the screen, especially the problems with it; I'm particularly interested in looking at the 'rubber curling in' bit as this could explain the cited size problem.

Who organised the fitting of the screen? Was it via your Insurance?

Launceston is where you'll find Western Windscreens. Steve is very good and I know him and his work ethic well enough to recommend him.

I've taken a couple of pictures and will upload once I'm at home later with access to my laptop.

To my mind the screen must be smaller as it's the same rubber and that covered the paintwork ok before. The windscreen fitter did bring a new rubber but it was slightly narrower than mine, so would have been an even worse fit!

After all the rain I've had to remove my carpets again to dry everything out!!

This might be the case but it might be down to how he's fitted it; height, depth, centering and camber can make a lot of difference. Sometimes, the old screen is not the benchmark to go by and although the previous Sigla screen fit did not leak, it may not have been 'set' in the best/correct position.

AFAIAA, the outer sealing rubbers are all the same size. If there is that much of a difference in size, one of them may not be the correct type.

This is the first issue, and fixing this will solve the others. If your insurer has nominated the fitter, complain that they do not have the experience and that you will take the car to an OPC of your choice to have the problem rectified. This will invariably mean an OEM screen which will eliminate the size issue from your snag list.

Just a quick one, where are you based paul, i looked at your website but struggled to see.

I need both front and rear screens out for my planned repaint and don't want problems afterwards..
