Who did you get to fit your PSS9?

Hi all, just signed up!

I've noticed that a number of you have got the Bilstein PSS9 suspension system fitted to your cars and I am hoping to get the same for my 993 C2S (Providing I can get my wife something in return...that's how it usually works isn't it?)

I have seen a number of places where the system is for sale, but my question is:

who did you get to fit your system and was it done to your satisfaction? I guess it's a DIY job, but obviously setting the tracking isn't.

James,

I am looking at getting it fitted soon, will get JZ to supply and fit, whichever works out cheaper. Probably the latter although JZ use Roock products. I wouldn't say its a DIY job, I have completely rebuilt a VW beetle before and wouldn't attempt this.

As a matter of interest will you be getting the RS sway (anti-roll) bars.

Poon,

thanks for the reply. I too was thinking of getting JZ to fit the PSS9, but wondered also about the Roock system. The trouble is, is that I haven't heard a single comment from anyone about the Roock system - mainly how it compares with PSS9. It would be easier to go for the JZ one-stop-shop solution.

Yes, I'll be getting the RS anti-roll bars also. Hopefully I can then get a bit less understeer and then leave it at that once I'm happy. Maybe RS engine mounts later and a strut bar (haven't decided which yet).

PSS-9 is adjustable therefore you can play around with settings, I reckon that the softest PSS-9 setting will be softer than the Roock, with the hardest being for track only. The RS sway bars will firm up the ride so beware. I have just got the RS mounts, and won't fit them until after the suspension mods so that I can assess the impact properly.

I'll peak to Steve McHale today re the PSS-9's, Jonas is on holiday.

Update,

Spoke to Steve today at length. Made me realise that I really know nothing about suspension tuning. He reckons that the spring length in the PSS-9 (six inches) is far to small for road use and that by simply backing off the dampers to soft you are totally mismatching the spring and damper set up.

He told me not to do it. He also said that the Roock set-up is the best he has ever experienced on a 993 designed to be driven on the road. It is made by H&R for Roock and is totally ride height adjustable, he would not recommend going as low a RS height though.

Now a sceptic would say that "of course he would recommend a Roock set-up as JZ are UK agents, however I really trust JZ (been using them for 4 years) and he has advised me against RS sway bars, exhaust upgrades and a larger throttle body as they are a waste of money unless I am going to go 3.8l.

Steve Bennett's 3.8litre car (911 PW feature) that I have been out in has a Roock set-up and he regularly tracks it and he is very happy.

So, I will trust my instinct to trust the people that I have trusted for the last 4 years and get a Roock kit.

Thanks,

now that gets me thinking; sounds convincing, just when I thought things were clear in my mind in that PSS9 was the thing to go for!

I will give the Roock solution some serious thought, I just wish there was someone "independent" who has had it fitted and could comment on its performance - you hear so much about PSS9.

The people on the rennlist and other boards are fairly knowledgable however I have to defer to the experts and Steve and Jonas are very experienced.

I also understand that their mission in business is to build long term relationships with clients that will see clients returning time and time again, nothing new I know, but they do it very well.

I have never experinced such good honest advice and service from a Company in the motor trade and will go along with their recommendation.

Will also get the ECU modded along with new stiffer top mounts that Steve recommended. Will probably get the RS mounts fitted at the same time as they are gathering dust in the garage.

I know how you feel though, I just spent all weekend with a post I started on the rennlist and doing hours of research. Should have listened to Jonas in the first place.

Interesting that JZMachtech advise that exhaust upgrades and a larger trottle body are a waste of money unless going to 3.8l as these are power upgrades that they offer themselves... or am I missing something here??

Alex,

I think Steves point to me was that the ECU remap will give a good improvement, the throttle body and exhaust not so much, as the originals are pretty good. Unless I get a top-end at the same time for the better part of £1500 I will not really notice that much of a difference. He did recommend a that the throttle opening is checked.

Steve probably knows that pound for hp I would not be that impressed, others however are prepared to pay to extract as much as possible. I however am not.

I was talking to them about a 3.8l conversion but will probably stop spending too much on mods and save up for a TT or RHD RS.

This is why I trust them.
