which 911 part 27 !!!!!!

hi guys

me again !.....i do have the 911 bug....saw a F Reg 1988 3.2 Carrera in dark blue metallic 105k miles this morning....nearly in my budget......around the 10k mark...formerly from formula fuchs , before that germany.....has had top end rebuild and just serviced , MOT.....the guy seems good too as he has an old 1972 2.2 T...is selling both to do house renovations

this seems newer for my money and i think its not an SC....has air con and elctric bits and bobs and fuchs alloys

any thoughts ?

That's the one you want - take a deep breath and cough up the extra 'folding', you won't regret it (assuming you've had it inspected and everything checks out) ! Top-end rebuild is good news (would cost you c.£2.5K if you were to get it done now) and F reg is the last of the batch (and the best - better gear box, 16'' fuchs, aircon is also worth having (not the best system out there, but it does work).

Providing everything is straight and the history is complete and kosher then go for it. Don't be put off by lhd (see the thread on this elsewhere) - price seems pretty reasonable (I assume it's a coupe not targa or cab), and mileage is fine, check to see when the clutch was last replaced - if it's still on the original one, which is just about feasable then that is a good bargainning point as it is c. £600-700 job. The best advice anyone could give you is GET A PROPER INSPECTION DONE !

Post '87 Carrera 3.2's are very nice cars. If you like it get a PPI done by a specialist, as mentioned above. Where is the car? We may be able to recommend somewhere local. Should cost no more than £150 and is worth every penny. The fact that the current owner has another, older 911 is a good sign - hopefully an enthusiast who looks after his cars!

i am looking at autostrausse , a porsche specialist doing the inspection in a week or so.......thanks for the feedback....its not over yet but seems it could be a good bet?

can you remove the whaletail from these....is it a prob with the aircon ?

I am sure autostrasse will do a good job - don't know them personally but they are well known.

You can remove the whale tail no problem. Aircon shouldn't be a problem unless you want to put a 964 tail on instead. It is best if you can find a new, original non-tail engine cover and keep the current one in case you want to put it back later. Also if you take the tail off your current engine cover you will have to weld over the fixing holes etc. Although "upgrading" to a non-tail cover is a very popular conversion there are still covers out there and finding one shouldn't be too hard.

There's another thread on here called 'losing the whaletail', that will tell you all you need to know about removing it - I've just had mine taken off (my car has aircon too - so it is not a problem !) I would recomend that you try to find a spoiler-less lid to swap on rather than welding the holes up in the existing one as it always gives you the option to swap back. Also you can return the car to original condition if you eventually come to sell the car on to someone who is a stickler for originality.

I have read somewhere that if you remove the rear spoiler (whaletale) that you should also change the front spoiler. Otherwise you will upset the handling!

That's the theory but I've yet to experience any difference in action. The rear spoiler only really has any effect at significant speed. As the majority of driving we do in the UK is in more or less a straight line and at low speed I just don't think it's worth worrying about. It would be far more dangerous to remove the front spoiler and leave the rear as the front would go light at speed.

Unless you intend to do some serious high speed / high G cornering then I wouldn't get too worried. The vast majority of 3.2s that I have seen without whaletail still have the front spoiler in place.
