Warranties....Are they worth it?

Does anybody have any experience of buying warranties independently of a garage?

Were they expensive? What cover/exclusions did you have? If you had to claim, did they pay up with ease, or did you have to fight them for every penny?!

Thanks in advance.

I had an independent warranty on my old Nissan 200SX. They are very specific about what is covered and what is not. I had a coil fail a few months after buying the car. The warranty company refused to pay up, I complained to the garage that sold me the car and lo-and-behold the warranty compay suddenly paid up. Seems that big dealer networks sell so may of these things they have some sway with the warranty companies. Anyway, they are not "get out of jail free" cards but do offer some piece of mind. Just make sure you read the fine print as they have limits on the maximum amount they will payout (normally pretty low), limits on what is covered and are very tight on you sticking to (their defined) service intervals, which I found quite hard as I was piling the mileage on.

Mine cost £350 a year I think and to be honest I can't remember exactly what was covered - basically it was anyting that shouldn't wear out!

Cheers, James

Interestingly , I recently found out that the price for a 1 year warranty on my Exige was around the £200 mark which I thought was great value considering the cost of parts and reliability of these things. So theorotically, a 911 should be even less! Well worth having if you don't like getting your hands dirty yourself.

I'm looking for a late 80's 3.2 Carrera and if I buy one privately, I'd like to buy one of these off the shelft Insurance Warranties. The only company I've found that will do one for the age/mileage/type of car is Warranty Holdings, but the cover is limited to a £1000 claim limit per incident.

Does anybody know anybody better?!

They were the poeple I used. I think they are the main warranty company. I don't know of any others myself.

there's a company in bolton called warranty wise -
www.warrantywise.co.uk

i'm considering buying one for my 3.2 targa - the stuff they send you with the quote looks great (but i suppose it always does), i think it's about £400 for standard cover but then you can upgrade to one that even covers you for mot failure and all wear and tear including tyres! - also this company puts high limits on the claim and you can claim as many times as you need.

don't know of anyone that has used them yet but if i find anyone i will post their findings.

regards

steve

Hi

I am not a 911 owner but am getting one in a few months hopefully. I have experience with
http://www.warrantydirect.co.uk/
who after alot of research offered the best package. Most stuff was covered (believe me I needed it with a Alfa 164 24v Cloverleaf).

One claim was refused as they said corrosion was not covered (a pin on ABS control unit had corroded) and at first they refused to pay for a replacement Bosch ECU for engine management saying I had to send it for repair instead, I mailed the operations director with a complaint and he agreed to pay.

With any warranty you really do have to read all the small print. (I have heard terrible things about warranty holdings by the way). Price was pretty reasonable for an Alfa as they are so unreliable, cost me about £350 a year.
