Want to buy a 964

I am hoping to join the world of porsche in the very near future and have been looking mostly at 964's, 1992-1994, C2/4.

With a purchase budget of around the 23k mark, this model seems to be the one thats fits. More importantly, i simply love the look of the car.

I have spent alot of time reading various reports etc and most of what I have read has been rather dissapointing. There seems to be alot of caution out there and correct me if I am wrong but this particular model seems to have gathered a reputation for being rather troublesome..

Is there any good news out there or do experienced porsche owner advise to avoid this model.. Any experienced advise is welcome and I really would love to hear from happy 964 owners (if there are any)...

With £23k, you should get a very nice late model(which had no problems I can think of, only the early models did)

Or if you don't want to risk it...LHD 993.

After much head scratching about whether to go for a 964 or a 3.2 carrera, I have now decided to go for the 3.2, and having driven one the extras you get on a 964 aren't that significant.

Personally, if I were you I'd go and get the sexyest 3.2 you can find - maybe a Supersport - and save yourself some money.

If, however, you really must have a 964, Northway have got a Turbo bodied Celebration model for your budget and it looks F***ing gorgeous!

The 964 is a more tricky purchase. And here in the UK many have not been looked after well. But the good news is that you have good budget , and will definitely find the right car if you try hard.


A good 964 is really nice, still with a 911 feel, (narrow, agile, unique - like a good woman!!!!) and there is no reason you should avoid one that checks out properly.


Good advice would be to either buy from a decent specialist (and Ray Northway is one), asking exactly what the state of the car really is and what could be expected to need work later (and if they cant/wont answer you're in the wrong place). Or to get a private sell checked by a good, realistic 964 man (GT1, RJA, Northway e.t.c.) but not a Porsche main dealer.


One more point, many of the UK cars , although registered 91/2/3 will be '90 build year cars therefore will not have enjoyed the factory mods, upgrades that the European cars got. So check the tenth digit of the chassis number L=90,M=91 e.t.c... (no 'O').

hello adrian et al,

i just spoke with an owner of an 89 964 C4. the car is in good condition....so far. However it doesn't come with any service history and he doesn't know what it's been really done to the car other than suspension work, brakes and tires/wheels. car is clean inside and engine wise. Barring a PPI, I think this is a winner. However without FSH, I am very leary. What I like to know you guy;s opinion is.... if the PPI checks out fine, is FSH still a show stopper?

Personally I rate the Documented history of a car pretty highly, although the actual service history is only a small part of that, so I would be worried and unless it is an absolute bargain I would probably walk away. If the car has been well cared for it would have a stack of bills and the service history.

If it doesnt have a history it does not guarantee that the car is bad. But it does guarantee that you will; 1/ increase your risk many times over,2/ Have a car worth substantially less than its historied equal. 3/ Have a porsche that will be much more difficult to re sell.


There are plenty enough good 964 out there that you do not need to be taking big chances. If you were the practical type that could check, understand and repair the car yourself it may be worth a punt. But I suspect that by asking about a PPI that you are not that experienced. I say walk and work harder to find another 964.


If you do indeed go forward with this car, use a specialist for the check not a Porsche main dealer.

i agree. i'm not in a hurry and won't mind taking my time to find a good 964... or even a 3.2. the price for that particular 964 is quite low too. I'm still going to investigate further. thanks.
