Unrealistic - 1980's daily driver

After hankering after an 80's 911 Carrera for years, well since the 80's I am thinking of getting one.

Now I have never owned one before, I have seen a couple but have no idea what I should look out for.

The air-cooled machines seem to be about £12k up does anyone have a basic breakdown of the approx costs. Is it worth buying a more tired car if it's cheap?

Also my plan is to use it daily for at least 12 months, work and back etc about 10 miles a day is this unrealistic?

It'll be fine.
Try and bag an old coupe for ten grand and off you go.
They only cost about £500 pa to run.

Give us a shout on how yo get on.

I'll have some of what you are smoking please :D

Generally not good to buy one which needs work, parts can be expensive, and when the work is done it will usually be worth less than what it has cost. Make sure you price up any work required before agreeing on a price.

80s Porsches are definitely not my area of expertise, however I know many (esp. I believe the 3.2 230hpish ones) are quite popular as the basis for backdates/73 RS copies etc etc... as they are quite cheap, fairly plentiful and the motor is pretty bulletproof, if cared for - and often even if not.

Back when I had my sc,the thing then was to update by fitting 964 bumpers..
Its a funny old world.

I'm holding off buying a 993 until I find a kit to backdate it with 964 style front wings.

Course he is! MC has never said anything bad ever about the looks of the 993.

For my part, if you offered me another 3.2 for FREE, I'd have a full body and mechanical inspection done before I decided if I could afford to accept it.
:what:

Glad you agree that the 964 is the best looking car of the bunch.

:thumb: 964 = best looking, 993 = best engineered.

Back on topic, CC saying he wouldn't take one for free without a PGI should hopefully give the OP enough warning!

!

Thanks for the replies, I guess what is being said is make sure it's not mechanically broken / badly worn or hankering lots of tin worm, failing that anything sub £10k is going to be OK...

I will see what comes along.

How do they take being stored or not used for a while as a number of these cars seem to spend quite a lot of time in garages and on drives, do they recommission well, what might need doing I.e. sieze etc.

!

Can someone point me in the direction of model codes vs car + picture.

I know the 996's etc but the older ones I am not so sure about...

Look to your left on these pages and they will mysteriously appear in front of you as you scroll down, under the heading 'Porsche model range'

I really don't want to be a doom monger on older cars as I only have my own experience of one 3.2, but I am making it my mission to at least make anyone asking AWARE of the sheer cost.

£14k 3.2 carrera. I spoke to the indie that looked after it and he said it was 'a good car', new clutch, rebuilt engine and box..

I thought it needed a little tidying and was delighted when my £11,500 offer was accepted!

It needed £16,000 of work.
:(

So I was not messing around: what would I rather have: £11,500 or something that needs £16,000 spending on it?

When you consider the end result (due to mileage) would probably be a £20k car, but only if I sold immediately after it was finished?

If I HAD to pay to get the work done then I'd honestly not want the same car for free.
:(

Body inspection by classic porsche expert is more important than engine IMO. I'd have MUCH rather had a mint shell with no engine or box.
:)

I bought my first 911 ( Mint condition 911 3.2) about 4 years ago. Loved the car as a weekend classic but did find it hard work when using it for normal day to day driving, particularly in heavy traffic and warm weather days. The clutch could be a little heavy, suspension a little stiff and the air circulation in the cabin on the warm side. However this was part of the car's charm as a classic motor. I would also be careful about the condition of the car - particularly the body work. Any rust under the real wheel arches (kidney bowl / sills) could be £1.5k per side minimum. Buy the best you can and run it as a classic - you will love it. I now have a 993 which is a bit easier to live with.......
