UK Car Tax from April 2025

Does anyone know if the Band K car tax allowance will be continuing when the Budget changes come into force in April this year? Currently, cars with CO2 figures over 225 g/km that were rated before 23rd March 2006 pay the lower Band K rate. However, this article published by the RAC implies that 2001 - 2017 cars will be taxed according to their emissions: https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/buying-and-selling-guides/car-tax-bands-explained/ If this is correct, cars that currently have the Band K concession will move onto the higher rates. The Government website isn't particularly helpful either because it doesn't say if the rates shown are current or for April 2025 onwards: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables/rates-for-cars-registered-on-or-after-1-march-2001

What do you guys think? I'm in the market for a 996 Turbo on which I thought I was going to be paying £415 tax, but now I'm not so sure! Will it be going up to £735?

Just had a look & a 718 GT4 & 992 Turbo, would both pay £2,745pa?? Yikes.

That’s just ridiculous isn’t it. The amounts that motorists are expected to pay will surely have to change or otherwise the backlash against this mob in at the moment will grow

Net zero hoax will be the greatest tax generator known to man. At some point folk will realise it has nothing to do with climate, but more about wealth distribution.

...but nothing will be done regardless of the backlash.... we just suck it up here in the UK..... we moan and squeal and then pay whatever we're asked too.

Car tax

The above link seems to lay it all out, main differences are that the first year tax has gone from large to huge for high CO2 emitting cars.

I paid approx £2,220.00 for the first year tax on the 992 back in Oct 2023, that would now be £4,680.00. Increases on renewals look minor except for EVs over £40k

Anyway, I can confidently say that UK motorists have a fantastic deal in terms of costs- a VW Golf is £180,000 here* for a basic one and the population aren’t rioting over it, so I doubt the UK will do so.

*And you have to pay £65,000 after ten years to be able to drive it for another 10 years.

Believe nothing.....question everything.

So anything 2001 or newer is getting a huge tax hike!! Mine looks like it's going from circa £400 to over £700! God I hate this government

Why did they change this? One of the reasons I went with a 996 turbo over a 997 turbo 😑

I don’t think this is the case. My understanding is that the changes affect the first year tax rates on new vehicles - which is doubling. I think following year tax rates are unaffected and only increase by RPI (funny how they don’t use CPI isn’t it?). I believe the tax rates are protected - other than the inflationary increase - and hard baked in for the life of the vehicle.

You get the impression they'll just keep moving the goal posts to force people out of the worst polluting cars despite most of them doing hardly any miles. An excuse to use them more I guess and get your moneys worth.
