Tyre Pressures

Off to the Ring and Spa this weekend and wanted to get peoples thoughts on tyre pressures.

The last trackday I did at Silverstone had my Contis tread blocks breaking up rather badly. On checking the pressures they went over 40psi. What do people recommend as a good road and track pressure?
 
You have to drop the pressure once you get to the track - experiment (and it depends on the weather/temps) but at least 6psi and then take a reading as soon as you take a break, then increase/decrease the pressure when hot to be around 'normal'.

Yes that's a bit wooly but you need to experiment.

Take your own pump.
 
You could retrofit a TPMS system which to a 993 not running hollow spokes is easy and will cost you c£110 for the kit and £50 for fitting ;-)

Makes real time monitoring of both tyre pressure and temperature a doddle for anyone who does regular track days :thumb:
 
The car is on 18" wheels rather then the original 17"

What do people recommend as the best all round compromise. As the handbook or does anyone have some magic.

Does your version of the handbook actually give tyre pressures for the 18" wheels, since they may not have been released for the 993 when your car was built? :dont know:

Later handbooks give them as 36psi(F)/44psi(R) for 18" wheels but 36psi(F)/36psi(R) for 17" wheels, and I know from experience that you don't want to run the 18" on the lower rear pressures. :wink:
These are cold pressures for road use only, naturally. For track use, as others have implied, you'd have to lower the pressures once the tyres accumulate a little heat to levels which you find to suit the conditions on the day.
