How badly does your 996 tramline to ruts in the road?
Mine wanders, weaves and snatches a lot in my opinion even give the wide tyres.

Have had my car fully checked out all suspension etc OK and tyres approx 3/5 worn and very even.

No idea how old the tyres are but visibly look fine.
 
1) who checked out your car? Many people tell you they can setup the geometry properly on a 911, but most cannot.

2) On ONE sidewall of each tyre (so it might be on the inside tyrewall) is a datestamp - four numbers in an oval depression usually near/part of the DOT markings.

For example 0709 would be manufactured in Feb 2009, or 5111 would be Dec 2011.

Go have a look.....
 
Northway checked the car over for a good three hours.

They were happy to do a geo but they said the car drove great - I am not sure if they got it up to 60+ which is where the unstablness is most apparant.

They said as tyres were wearing evenly to leave the geo until new tyres were on the car.

Will check out the dates - thanks for that tip.
 
New tyres on the front make a massive difference. Best brand is Michelin.

I'll second that. When I first got my c2 it had pirelles on the back and it used to trammline frequently. When I changed to ps2's the difference was immense.
 
3/5 worn front tyres are probably the problem especially if they are also more than 3 years old.

If you're planning to keep the car for a while I'd change all four now and get the use out of them. You'd be surprised just how much better that c£750 spend will make your whole driving experience.
 
I scared the %#%^ out of myself the other day for just this reason. Car wandered left on a right hander, then snatched hard... The wife was not impressed.

Having had the tyres replaced, and the car looked at, this is due to the Geo being hugely out. Getting it sorted before it goes out again!

Would get the geo assessed in full to be sure. :thumb:
 
I have been led to believe all RWD 996s do this...? Apparently it's more noticeable on the GT models.

Uneven tyre wear and poor geometry can cause tramlining, but the effect is very exaggerated by low tyre pressures. Its very important to adhere to the reccomended pressures, a couple of lbs down on the front doesn't sound like much but that can change the handling dramatically, and certainly causes tramlining.
 
my C4 did this and was fixed by a pair of front tyres and a geo set up, i'd go for the same if I was you, the salesman that sold me the car was unimpressed when i said my BMW 1 series handled better!!!!
 
911's are very sensitive with tyres especially at the front.
 
My 996t was bought, 10 days ago, with brand new PZeros on the rear but the fronts were close to the limit. Having not driven another Porsche I was thinking the low speed 'tramlining' might have been a common characteristic. Yesterday I had a matching pair of new PZeros put on the front.....totally transformed!
