Hi folks,

I'm currently doing my homework before buying a 996tt in the New Year.

Any idea the rough trade in value of my 996 C4S?

03 plate MY03. Artic Silver. Graphite leather, sunroof, small alu pack, CDR 23, very few options. 80k miles, recent full respray, recent refurbed alloys, FSH. Looks in very good condition now due to the above.

I know its not £7k and I know it wont be £18k.

Any ideas from those in the know??

SpectralUK has his loaded '04 4S with similar miles up for £16,995.

Text your reg to 83600. It'll give you a 'forecourt figure' that may well be not too far from reality.

Trade-in: £11-13k

What?

You expected to leave with your trousers still on?

wrong time to sell now too......
if you can buy now, and sell the 4S early next year, you'll probably get a few quid more for it.

did the 'text the reg' thing:

for a 4S with 120k miles (that's 40k miles more than mine) it says:

Auction: £10200, Private: £12500, Trade in £11200, Forecourt £15500...

So I guess I wont be sending it to auction!

Roughly how much should be added for the 40k miles less that its done?

Any one got access to a glasses guide? I can have a look on Friday when I'll be able to look at one. Any good?

03/03 C4S manual with 44,000 miles and sat nav £15,300 trade
mileage adjustment 0.5% per 000 miles so 15300 X.5%= £76.5 per 000 miles
80-44=36 X 76.5 =£2754
15300 - 2754 = 12546 for car with nav

Many thanks Mark, thats very useful.

To be honest I wouldn't be too fussed if I received that for it as a trade in. I put the feelers out earlier in the year for a quick sale privately for £14k (when I thought I was buying a turbo and needed to shift it to raise the funds) and had a large amount of interest.

There aren't many nice C4S's around at any mileage for around the 14k price point.

I may stick it up for sale at about £15k and see what happens over the next few weeks and if it sells then I'll be in a nice position come the new year.

Alternatively I might see what turbos are going for at auction.

Decisions decisions.....

Where are you people when I want to buy a car !! ;)

Please sell it to a private buyer and don't let the traders take your pants down.

Now some useful intel. Local C4S near me with 80k I think an 02 plate. Up for 16,500, I offered 14,000 as a trade deal and he said yes. Unfortunately he didn't respond fast enough and I had bought my C4 by then.

Do not buy a Turbo at an auction!
When you are ready to buy a Turbo ask on the forum for advice.

Haha, whats the worst that could happen!??

People buy turbos from auction all the time. If I were to even consider it I would take a close friend of mine who runs a good Porsche Indy to try to get a very vague idea of the condition of the car. Admittedly I doubt there is a great deal he could tell just in the auction scenario, but I certainly wouldnt completely rule out buying a car from auction.

I should have put a context to my sentiment - my error.
Of course anyone can buy at an auction - but it is high risk. Limited examination, private punter versus trade. A trader does not have the shock of putting the car right for selling on as a private punter might have.

Why? The cost of work is the cost of parts - he has to pay his staff even if they sit all day looking at the Esquire pin-ups and drinking coffee.
Private punter has parts & labour. These cars can rack up a £5k bill in the blink of an eye.

I spent 30 years buying and selling via auctions. The risk factor is largely governed by the source of the car.
Scenario.A mint 911 which ticks all the boxes, is entered from Local Jaguar/bmw/Audi Main dealer.Low risk. They are clearing a part ex which they do not have desire to resell.
Scenario.Same car with same spec from dealer(like me) High risk. Why would this car be entered from your local"honest John" garage unless it had issues?
Scenario.Any car from CC trade or the like. The "selling" division of we buyany shite.com.Generally awful cars.
Re the prices.Car from first vendor, will make huge money.More than you can buy for in Autotrader, and it will be traders bidding not private people.

Well coomo, I´m sorry to say that your 30 years experience buying at an auction may let you down - there is always a first time. I can tell you that I actually saw a car that had been traded through an auction from aprestige main dealer that had been taken in part ex and sisposed off via auction as the dealer was not a Porsche main dealer and no desire to sell it on his forecourt.

That particualr car ticked all the boxes ' few owners, last one had the car fo 5 years, service bills, the dealer had a service done at GBP3k and it was inspected by an indy on our behalf. The car was KNACKERD and UNTIDY despite appealing in the description. It needed at LEAST another GBP6k spending on it on gearbox and transmission repairs. Bang goes your 30 years of auction experience versus my common sense "use your head not your heart" logic. I am sure there will be bargains via auction, but still a high risk.

I also saw an Aston Martin DB9 sold on via Stratstones. All AM service histpry. But there was weeping oil - 15 hours labou to fix that oil leak. I used a friend who knew the guys at Stratsone Wilmslow - that car had a history as long as my arm - extended warranty and in/out all the timewith warranty claims. They took it in part ex when the waranty could not be extended and sold it on via auction. Reason - too much baggage and issues.

These cars defy laws of logic at times - low mileage is not to be synonymous with condition and vice versa. In my humble experience of buying just one Porsche 996 Turbo, I´d always say start with a clean sheet of paper, do your own VERY THOROUGH due diligence, and if it passes that, then look firther at the car. I am an advocate of PPI´s so I´d always recommend that. Auction will not allow you to do that - so you are exposed. But hey, some like to play Russian Rouleete with their bank account and house and life savings. I for one do not.
