The new 997 Turbo says it will do 0-62 in 3.9sec for the price tag of £100K.

What (street legal) cars will get you to 62 faster for less money?

I was struggling to think of many!

Porsche 959.

0-62 in 3.6 seconds.

Nearly 20 years old now and £100K is the going rate for a 2nd hand one these days.

As for new cars what about one of the Nobles? They must be in that ball park.

TVR Cerbera 4.5 will do 3.8 / 3.9 (but only if its very dry!)...I can vouch for its quickness having had 4 TVRs...think Sagaris might, can't remember.

Tim,

Interested to know how fast real world TVR Cerbera/Sagaris is, and how useable the power is.

The raw figures look impressive, however I have never driven one.

Sagaris / Cerbera is an interesting one...most reviews have said Sagaris is the most useable TVR to-date but I have to disagree. Having had a Tamora fairly recently (which is a 6 cylinder as in the Sagaris, although slightly less powerful) you had to work the gears and engine quite a lot to get the most out of it. The beauty of the big V8s was the torque...3rd gear in the Cerbera could happily do 20 or 120mph...couldn't beat the sound of the V8s either. I had 3 V8s before moving to a 6 and I would go back to an 8 if I was ever to get another TVR.

Real world speed is dependant on conditions and driver skill, far more than say in a 996 or a 997. In the wet you have to tread very carefully - there are no driver aids, not even ABS. In the dry you still have to make sure tyres are warmed, preferrably a warm road too. Having said that, due to the lack of dsriving aids, you can easily feel when the car is on the edge and it is very easy to correct assuming you haven't completely overdone it. On a dry summers day (not that I race) I was never been beaten by a Porsche (don't think I ever played with a Turbo mind) in the Cerbera (it did have 420bhp  ). Real world usability is another issue...the Tamora did not last long - I think I have outgrown TVRs...reliability is not as bad as people thing (although if you get a duff one, duff is majorly duff), I had a few problems with cooling but nothing serious...even used to drive to work every day in the Cerbera....but they are fairly uncomfortable (suspension fairly basic), they can leak, the heating / cooling inside is terrible usually and turning locks are pretty appalling as is rear visibility. I would have one as a second car again but never as my only one again.
