Hi,

Anyone know this car or care to comment on it? A colleague of mine is interested and I may be viewing it with him tomorrow.

As much as I like to big up prices that is a little overpriced for a private sale IMHO. I would think £38-40k to sell. However if te colour combo is perfect for them then someone may be prepared to pay more but this really is top dollar money so would have to be my perfect spec to consider anything over £40k.

Personally I don't get turbo wings even on a turbo which has to have them, a 4s does not and it just distracts from the lines IMHO. From some angles looks ok but directly from behind as most people will see it I think they are ugly.

Also the service shows very mileage and not time dependant. Just been serviced after 3 years with what looks like some us, top end cars demand everything by the book to justify it IMHO.

Also note that I viewed some similar mileage cars with scuttle, arch rust and even rotten under side window seals. Storage in damp conditions is no good for any car so don't assume anything with low mileage ;-)

This is where it is worth knowing the cars, seeing some bad / average ones and the good ones just stand out pretty easily.

This would need to be spot on to get within £10k of the asking price

No - but I spotted that up for sale first a few months ago.

Stupidly overpriced.

Someone will pay it though.

I've just read the advert - what are my thoughts?

A low miles highly polished wide-bodied car appeals to the collector, not the driver.

Therefore the huge gaps in service history knock the value of this car down, not up.

I love the initial headline paragraph, talking about new tyres, Swiss-polish on good paintwork... but says nothing about mechanical condition or recent work completed.

Nor does any other part of the advert.

'Excellent service history'? I'd say the opposite.

So either an underused car with a poor advert, or a poor car that has done low miles.

You'd have to go and see to find out which.

But 47k GBP?

I would agree with the comments above.

I hope that this isn't entirely unrelated and I'm not intending to hijack your thread, but one thing I've always wondered about very low mileage cars is this:

How easy or otherwise is an older car, such as the 993, to either "clock" or more likely given the service histories, to simply disconnect the speedometer, so that travelled miles don't register.

On the rare occasions that I have thought about trading mine in for a lower mileage example, it has always troubled me. :?:

I have always taken some comfort from the fact that mine had about 43k on the clock when I bought it and it wasn't a particularly collectible car at the time. I have therefore assumed that it is highly likely to have been accurate and I know that I have done the rest of the miles. :thumb:

I appreciate that I am particularly suspicious given my work and I am sadly aware that the moment something starts to increase in value, there are countless people who seek to take advantage, some honestly, some less so!

If the answer, from one of those mechanically minded chaps who has already replied, is that its not that difficult to disconnect the speedometer, I would be very concerned by the fact that the car hadn't been to the OPC between 1997 and 2000. Who on earth would do that to a virtually new Porsche!

I'm sure there are other ways of checking, but as it casts some doubts, it cannot be worth that amount of money!

Ps: Having had another look at the service history I'd also be very concerned about the last three years!

It might be an idea to cross-reference the ownership history with the service history?

...you can usually tell the mileage from a glance at the interior.

But your point is well made. :thumb:

Thanks for the feedback, I shall pass the comments on to my colleague. If I do get to see it tomorrow I will let you know my own thoughts.

Steve

It's a beautiful car, but couldn't you get a turbo for that money?

They most certainly will.

It's got 37,000 miles. That's all they care about.

A reconnolisation of the seats, new pedal rubbers, new mats and a good clean of the interior will easily refresh an age/mileage worn interior. Not sure if you just need to unscrew the speedo cable to disconnect the odometer? Gut instinct counts for a lot I guess....

Yes, but
a) you can tell these bits are new, and therefore why? :?:
b) there's always something left behind that is worn/over-shiney as it is difficult to replace.

Classic Grey is pretty tricky to keep fresh. I viewed a car in the 20,000's with grey and it looked a bit grubby.

The leather can still crack and scuff at the age too, so if it has been touched up I'd call that caring maintenance.

I don't know this car so can only suggest a proper viewing and inspection before parting with anything like the money asked.

If its a very good, low miles car, with amazing paint and lots of money spent then expect to pay big. I'd say there's room for negotiation here even if it is a bloody good one though. The grey interior holds it back a little IMO regardless of condition.

Good luck, hope it isn't a wasted journey as many of these can be.

My thoughts too, you would need a few more grand for the turbo, but I know which one I'd have and it wouldn't be the turbo wanbee at that price

It looks amazingly over polished, and at least 9k over priced. As mentioned by others the devil is in the detail, my car came with full service history but first service under my ownership at 9m found the fuel filter had never been changed, stamps in the book are exactly that, stamps in a book, mean nothing without invoices the verify work done.
