Do you think they’re worth £350-400k?

Especially since they reintroduced the manual gearbox and it’s a Touring with a bit of exclusivity.

Would you buy one if you had the money?

I think its one of those cars that greater than the sum of its parts and so on one hand yes its worth it over a standard GT3 BUT its at a price point where its competing with some none Porsche cars that mean you would really need to be a Porsche fan to justify it ;-)

Even though they are bloody expensive I’d say they have to be worth it and I say that because you are buying into a smaller pool of cars. And to some people that means more than the car itself sometimes

Aren’t these affected by the same well publicised 991.1 GT3/RS engine issues? I guess as nobody drives them there is virtually no data on how reliable the units are. Anyone aware of any preemptive replacements on the R, or able to confirm if this model is affected or not?

I think so, but I'm not sure, to be honest I always considered it as something out of my grasp so I never really paid a lot of attention, but then I saw this...

And I think it's probably one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen, my two favourite colours in a scheme that really seems to accentuate the lines of the car, and it's exclusivity could potentially make it the only car you'd ever need, nothing else would ever feel as special so it's probably the only car that I'd use if ever I was super fortunate enough to put one in the garage.

If it’s mainly the looks you’re after, you could probably create something similar out of a base Carrera / S for not much outlay. Front and rear bumpers, wheels, lowering springs, stripes, interior retrim, bosh. For a lot less than a real R anyway. That in itself would be a very nice rare car, unique in fact. Just don’t put a “911 R” badge on it 😂

Worth and value are a funny thing. Change the terms to Art, and then you start shaking your head.
Mark Rothko sells paintings in the 10's of millions, yet to me they just look like a wall where I've tried various shades of paints. Check below.

How a painting that looks like a Ukrainian flag can sell for more than $40m is beyond me.

I think it's gorgeous but I wouldn't try to copy one because it would look too much and would definitely look like I was trying too hard.

My 996 will look like an obvious hybrid/special/whatever and it'll be more RS than anything else, but I definitely wouldn't badge it as one or try to pass it off as one.

I think the R is just a lovely thing and because of its exclusivity and it being a poster car then I'd love one.

Why not badge your 996 as the MLR996H..........?

you could take a 991.1 GT3 with G6 engine and allow RPM tecknic to do the touring conversion
then add the stripes

or you could tape a banana to piece of card and sell it and use the money to buy the real thing

I'd like an original ST or an original Rudge TT Racer, but no one really knows what the real thing is, back in the 1970s or the 1930s the 'original' was usually just whatever the factory had on the shelf or had a favourable deal with from a supplier.

I think it's a bit easier to use the BOM to recreate an 'original' 996 RS but whether that's the best thing you could end up with is another question. As I said, for me, I found the RS chassis and running gear very favourable, but the engine whilst exciting made me question whether I really wanted one as a road car - interestingly I noticed this as a passenger - as a driver you're totally caught up in the emotion of it, but as a passenger I quickly started questioning whether it was a sensible road car or not and ultimately decided not.

Years later I have now had multiple opportunities buy an RS, and eventually I came to the conclusion that I wanted one, but with a bigger capacity engine and more low down torque. A large capacity Clubsport RS Carrera if you like, so that's what I'm having built.

to be able to build a car to your needs sounds fantastic Harry

the older generations must feel totally alive on bumpy b roads as the modern cars tend to smother bumps and then jump rather than roll lean and squat?

I found the opposite, but the more I hear/read the more I think I was just in a bad car, the 992 GT3 I drove scared the pants off me as it felt borderline unstable, then I watched Harry Metcalfe's video where he said the 992 GT3 was terribly unstable on back roads and I assumed they're all like that.

But I've been convinced since then that they're not, in fact they're apparently massively more stable than the 991 GT3 and whilst I didn't get along with that car I never felt like it was scary and literally couldn't hold the road.
