Temporary power steering loss after heavy rain

I went out in the car over the weekend and got caught out in a heavy downpour so pulled into the services. The car sat in the rain for 20 minutes, whilst pulling away after the rain had stopped there was a belt slipping/squeaking sound from the business end of the car, at the same time the power steering failed. After about a minute with the engine running it came back to life, no more squeaks.

There were no warning lights and instinctively it seemed a logical result of heavy rain getting in where it shouldn't. That said, is this is a sign of a pending failure of something that should be checked out?

This is the well known (surprised no one talks more about this), and well documented issue that affects all GT2's, being completely unusable in the rain. There's a comedy thread running elsewhere on the forum about how solid an asset the 996 GT2 is. All smoke and mirrors!
In fact rather than being something to keep I can only see the GT2 dropping in value quicker than GT4's credability for driving his 993 in the rain yesterday.

Tell you what Gav, I'll be doing you a massive favour, I'll let you swap your GT2 for my GTS, we can do the deal at Goodwood but I won't take it unless it comes with the weissgold wheels, it must have the weissgold wheels. Do like those wheels.

See you at Goodwood. Did I mention the wheels?

That was probably the belt 'aquaplaning' on the pulleys due to the water.

The power steering pump would have the greatest draw when turning the road wheels (ie steering). Worth checking the tension and condition of the belt though as a precaution.

I would imagine it would be rare for a power steering pump failure to coincide with a rain storm, but possible, though I still think it was as per line one above.

:D

Straight swap? I've had a few offers for it recently - it's not for sale though, hopefully never will be :)

Looking forward to Goodwood. I'm not 100% sure the GT2 will be coming though as I'm currently looking into a garage buddy for it, something that will handle my lunchtime sandwich drives and track days.

Cheers, that was my initial thought, it came back to life pretty quickly and the steering was back to normal for the drive home. It's been sat in the rain quite a few times though and this hasn't happened before. The OPC changed the AC compressor a few months back, would this have involved adjusting/altering the tension on the belt that drives the steering?

You mean you want someone to sort of run you on track days? You might be able to get one of the race teams to do that for you. They'll check your pressures when you come in and refuel for you.

As suggested above, your power steering is down to the serpentine belt - just change it.

You've not lost any undertrays, have you?

Chris.

1) deglaze the PAS pulley (it probably has a nice rubber/oil film on it.
2) or get new belt
3) or a new tensioner.

Try in that order, or don't go out the rain (which might be the easiest)
