Supercar Run

I had the pleasure of taking part in the Supercar Run a couple of weeks ago - 100 cars driving from Hyde Park to Monaco over 4 and a half days. 3 separate routes and a series of clues to solve on the way. The organisers had chosen some of the best roads I have ever driven on and the event was quite stunning. I was co-driving a friend's 997S and I have to say it was magnificent. We did quite a bit of dicing with a 996 4s and a 996 Turbo with a GT power pack and the 997 was more than able to keep up on all types of road. We also found that the Porsches were the ideal cross country car for the race and we all felt that we held our own against all the others present. Not bad when you consider that on our route alone there was an Enzo, an F50, an F40, a 430, masses of 360s, 550s and 575s, 5 Bentley Continental GTs and a Koenisegg CCR.

We pretty much tested the 997S to the limit and found it to be faultless. I drive a 1986 3.2 Targa and I am considering robbing a bank to get hold of the readies to get one. Totally awesome.

There were two Carrera GTs on the race (but not on our route) – one broke (knackered clutch after the owner tried doing a doughnut in it!) and the other one was voted most desirable car on the event.

There were a few brushes with the law (we were lucky and did not get stopped) - but no massive fines and no car confiscations. That could have been because we were on back roads most of the time. Our fame had spread before us - and those that did get stopped were told in no uncertain terms that the gendarmarie did not approve of the idea of a bunch of Les Anglais rampaging through their country at high speed on a jolly.

The next one is early June next year - but it is moving to Italy. All the cars start at the Villa d'Este on Lake Como and then drive the route of the Mille Miglia. Its costs £4,000 per car (includes all the hotels and food and drink) and you have to raise at least £3,000 in sponsorship for the charity that they support - but I have heard that they have already sold all the places ......... sorry.

I did the Cannonball Run Europe a couple of weeks ago in my 996 - that was awesome. 6 Days, £4k all in (except petrol and tolls!) We went to sweden, had a track day there also which was great fun. Sweden is beautiful and the Police were very accomdating, cheering us as we arrived and offering to watch over the cars in the evenings! We then headed back through Denmark, into Germany and down to Berlin. From Berlin we headed to Brussels to the stunning Conrad hotel, and then finished back in Weybridge.

Top week, great cars, great people! Was fined 500Euros in Germany for taking part in what the police thought was a race, but since have proved we were not racing and had the cash refunded - result!

Will definately be on next years event, it will be my third!

Going past a DB9 and a Continental GT on a tiny straight between hairpins in the Alps was a particularly good moment - if you get it right and have the car well set up into the corners you really can boot it out. The guy I was driving with had been on a couple of courses with Rob Gravitt (ex touring car champ) and his training company - Ultimate Car Control - and the cornering technique that he teaches was particularly effective on the tight stuff - basically hard last minute braking in a straight line and really vigorous steering. It works brilliantly with the 911s weight distribution. The guys who were behind us could not believe how quickly we were getting through tricky corners.

Happened across the start of this run from Hyde Park by accident. Thought I'd died and gone to supercar heaven. Some lovely machinery there. If I'd known you, I would have come and said hello

Doubly interesting morning as that was the night/day of the moonwalk for cancer charity, so the other half of the park was full of lasses wandering around in their bras!
