I have pursuaded the wife that our summer holiday this year should be spent driving through europe, probably into Belgium - Luxembourg - Germany - Switzerland - Italy and back up through France :D
.

We will of course be stopping off at the Nurburgring to do a few laps
. Has anyone driven it? Or have any advice of good places to drive through/to.

Hi Chris - when you stay in Italy and to a lesser degree France be sure to stay in a hotel that has secure parking.

Sundeep has done the 'ring.

The swiss alps in a cab will be great for your passenger - full panoramic view. Just watch out for the German bikers !

I am hoping to arrange a 911uk Swiss Alp tour at some stage this year - feel free to join us.

Great idea - but don't get put off if you can't make an open day on the ring schedule to do the ring itself - (and there is loads of traffic on it during open days) - however, just driving in the area is brilliant, the roads are absolutely fantastic -

I never had problems with the police in Belgium, but apparently people have.

Luxembourg - the roads are very twisty and damp and the catchment area is hundreds of feet below so you will enjoy it but won't feel inclined to push it.

Drive very slowly in Switzerland - due to plod.

Italy is a blast when you have a fast car and drive aggressively - the locals in their Puntos enjoy tailgating at 100mph plus - just think trackday and that will stop you getting nervous.

France - there are loads of other threads on this site about driving in France -

Enjoy -

LJ

Will do, Dad actually had his car stolen in France - it was then used in a bank robery in Belgium. I have an interesting conversation with a man from Interpol about it :?

When you you plan to do the Swiss Alp tour. We will be heading into Germany only after the World Cup has finished (9th or 10th July). Probably last two weeks of July will be when we are touring.

Did this a few years ago in my 964 Cab. A couple of pointers that worked really well.

Make a break mid-tour for a couple of days to park up. (the other half will really appreciate it) My trip was taking in Switzerland to catch up with friends from when I lived there. My location for 'park up' was Ascona in Ticzino, southern most Canton of Switzerland where you get the best of Italian lake environment combined with the orderliness/efficiency of the Swiss. Weather is always great too. To get there, there is a great drive from Geneva over the Nufenen pass which has great twistys and goes bloomin high. Also get hold of a brochure called 'Relais de Silence'.

http://www.silencehotel.com/

Its an association (not a chain) of country hotels dotted around France/ switzerland / germany. They're all out of town and to discourage guests from going into cities to eat, they all have restaurants to shame any over here. Rooms rates were brilliant but very easy to double it and more with dinner. :D

Having started with nothing more than the booking in Ascona and time to get there, we pretty much toured for 12 days on the back of the brochure, phoning ahead as we figured where we wanted to go next.

The main thing was once off the toll/motorways, you feel more inclined to cruise and enjoy driving/scenery rather than blast the local fauna off the roads. That'll save your aggression for the ring

i would also avoid august as that is when the whole of France, Germany and Italy goes on holiday and the roads are chaos.
